I was swimming two-three times a week prior to surgery. For those of you who swim - any estimate of when you returned to the pool after surgery?

Hi Zoee, as far as my surgeon was concerned, the incision had to be completely healed -- right now I have two floating stitches that are trying to make their way out, so he won't release me to swimming or baths until they come out and have been out for awhile.

      Hi Zoee,
I was released for swimming at three months post-op. I hope your pool is nice and warm, 90 degrees at least. It will feel so good.

I was told I could walk around the pool at about 3 months...I did try doing a few strokes at about 4 months but it was too painful yet. Floating did feel great though!

I swam and snorkelled on holiday at 6 months post op. I felt awkward and was told I looked awkward, especially snorkelling. I found it easier to "stand" in the water (with flippers on) and look down rather than float/swim on my stomach. Getting back into the boat was even more difficult and I ended up with bruises. Finally I stuck my feet in the air and someone in the boat pulled off my flippers. Yes, I was a snorkelling newbie.

My son was told he could go in the pool at about 3 weeks post-op. The Dr. said he could walk around in the water and try to float but no flip turns yet. When he went in the water so soon after the op, it felt awkward and he didn't like it so he didn't try it again until about 6 weeks post-op and then he liked being in the water.

He was allowed to ride an exercise bike at around 3 mos. post-op but not a real bike for a few more months in case of falls.

Pre-op curves were T45 & L65; curves post-op are approx. T31 & L34. Had a posterior spinal fusion from T8 to L3 on 7/12/07 at age 12. Doing great now in so many ways, but still working on improving posture.

I'm 6 month post op and have fun in the water but still find actually "swimming" (doing strokes, laps, etc...) a little too difficult but I notice I am getting better and am able to do more and more each time!

That's good to know chello! Spring is upon us here downunder and it's already warm enough for swimming. I look forward to experiencing that improvement.

When swimming, try breadtdtroke. It is easier on the spine as there is no rotation involved with the stroke. When you do waterwalking, chest deep gives you the best workout. Leg lifts to the front, side, and back are good exercises for the low back and are much easier in the water! I go to a therapy pool 4 times a week. The 90 degrees water feels great.

The only biking I do now is the recumbant bike. A regular bike requires you to lean forward and bend at the same time, which I don't do.
