  • 18 years post-op and having issues:

Hello everyone this is the 1st time that I have posted. I had harrington and luque rods inserted with fusion from T5-L2 in 1991 for a 65 degree curve that was only corrected 20%. I have felt pretty lucky until the past couple months regarding back pain. I have been used to suffering neck pain with severe muscle spasms since 1997 with 3 whiplash injuries, plus discovering that I have a Chiari-1 malformation about 4 years ago. So the lower back is new for me. It is difficult to sleep through the night as the pain wakes me up, no position is comfortable. I am an ER nurse that works 3 12 hour shifts that seems to really aggravate it too. I have been recommended to a Neurosurgeon at Tampa General Dr. Juan URibe by one our neurosurgeon's PA's. Just wondering if anyone has any input, I still have the hard ware in place and I am wondering if this is increasing my degeneration below the fusion and would appreciate any input.

    Thanks,

    Lori (scroliosisgirl)

      Lori,
You might want to try this post in the surgical revision section. I can't help you other than to suggest you see a scoliosis specialist with experience in revisions for adults. Here is a link to The Scoliosis Research Society. http://www.srs.org/find/ Pick out some Doctors in your area and then inquire about them on this Forum, but do it in the surgical revision section. Not all Neurosurgeons are trained in Scoliosis problems.

I have seen 3 surgeons in Florida recently (2 others years ago)and would HIGHLY recommend you visit Dr. Anthony Moreno at the Moreno Spine & Scoliosis Center on MLK in Tampa. He also has an office at Mease in Dunedin. He specializes in ADULTS (not kids) and reconstructive and revisions, and was the one who did a 120 degree curve on a Ukranian girl who had been refused by docs the world over.

I have my surgery in 2 days. I'll be posting (or my daughter will) during my recovery. I also have severe degeneration but I'm a first timer so I can't say if it's because of your Harringtons, though I've heard a lot of people had trouble with those.
