My surgeon has scheduled me for an IVC filter to be inserted in the femoral artery a week before surgery. It is used to prevent clots to the heart. Has anyone else had this? They request I get a ride home after insertion. Is it that bad/painful/dizzying?

I want to add that I do not have any blood or cardio problems. The doc sees this as precautionary and it can be removed a few weeks later. Read more here:

Hi Sandy,
Yes my surgeon requested that I have an IVC filter also, he did allow it to be inserted at the time of my surgery though. As a matter of fact I am having it removed on Thursday, it will be done as an outpatient under light sedation.
Same as you, I did not have a history of blood clots or any heart problems, I believe that my surgeon felt that this is a very long surgery and he is just very cautious.Dolores A

That's very interesting. My surgeon didn't mention it, but if he did, I probably would have gone for it.__________________________________________

Hi Sandy,
My surgeon never mentioned anything like that, however, it could be due to the fact that I took it upon myself to have a full medical by a General Surgeon, who specialises in screening patients about to have major surgery. Part of this medical involves blood tests, thyroid exam, lung function test and ecg. Copies of the results were then sent to my Surgeon, Anaethetist, Hospital and GP.Vali

My doc also had me go to a cardiologist for a cardio screening and EKG, to my general for a pre-op physical and lab work. I think the reason I'm having the IVC a week before surgery is that I live almost 2 hrs away from the doc, and I wanted it locally so I wouldn't have to make another trip. He says the filter never needs to be removed, but if you want it gone, it has to be within 6 weeks before it attaches itself to the vena cava.
Delores, Did your go through the groin? Did it hurt or were you dizzy after? I see your surgeon went to the pelvis. Do you have iliac screws? How do you feel after a month and a half?Last edited by johnsonbunch; 07-21-2009, 07:45 AM.Sandy
