  • Evaulating the literature

Here is a little exercise for anyone interested...

Over on Fix's website, this article was posted:

    conservative treatment study

Read the paper and see how many errors in thinking, poor study design, incorrect word usage, unsubstantiated conclusions, etc. you can find.

Then look here to see some well-taken comments by Linda and a guy from The Institute of Evidence-Based Chiropractic.

If you didn't spot at least some of those problems then maybe more practice trying to do so will help you when trying to understand the literature.

This is a skill that is mainly based on knowledge, not intelligence. It mainly requires skepticism absent evidence and trying to think of other ways to interpret the data beyond or instead of what he authors present. Authors are human and miss things (or are trying to gain financially).

Last, I applaud the chiros who recognize the need for evidence and understanding the literature and the rejection of chiro dogma. Maybe they can make a dent in the generally negative public perception of chiro.
