  • Oh, no...

    Hi all,
Has anyone had the misfortune of pulling out a screw? If so, can you tell me what it felt like? I think I may have done so...I called my surgeon's office...he is out of the country until late July. But his nurse thinks I may have just pulled a ligament, so we are waiting until monday to find out.
    What happened was:
My husband put a new battery in my car (it had died during its months of non-use), and I went to walmart, at which time the engine overeheated and I discovered I was low on oil. I bought some and was tipping forward slightly (not really bent) to put oil into the car when I heard a crack and felt a thud, and then my butt went pretty numb. It didn't really HURT right away. It ached. Now it hurts and it feels like there is something scraping or poking me.

    any thoughts??

Isnt there anyone who can give you an Xray and have a look at you before the end of July?. What happened to you does not sound right. Dont get worried though but I would be trying to get an answer before then, especially since you can feel something going on there. It wasn't even as if you were doing anything really heavy, and just bending over should not have caused this. Sorry I am not much help, just want you to know I am thinking of you.

I would be off somewhere to get someone to have a look fl tiger.

    Regards
    Lorraine.

Sorry, I can't help, not having experienced anything like this. I do know that sometimes a ligament can make a snapping sound and I hope this is all it is. Please let us know what it is when you have an xray? Good luck!

        FLT,

I hope they figure out soon what is going on with you. That certainly doesn't sound good, but maybe it is just a ligament. They can sound rather yucky when they go bad! Good luck, keep us posted. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

          Yeah, FLK ... I have ~thoughts~.

I really doubt you yanked a screw at 7 months post-op. Personally? With all the crap your doctor's fed you (15-20 miles walking a day?) since very early on, I'd find better care. If you have a SLIGHT chance you've pulled metal - and he can't see you, or find someone who CAN - *drop* him.

(I MAY have mentioned his lack of knowledge/attention before.)

Ligaments/muscles pop when they roll over hardware: Sometimes it leaves you sore ... sometimes not. I fell on my a** 6 days after surgery - the afternoon I got home (caring for myself) ... and no damage.

I've fallen/thrown myself into things several more times since then - and was sliding into bases at 7 months (at 40 years old ... sort of wishing I were 23).

Unless you're prone to pseudoarthosis, take a deep breath ...
Fusion is NOT the end of the world.

            FLT,

I would have to agree with Pam. If you thought for one minute you did something to a screw and you called the office and they don't have anyone on call who can see you I would be looking for a new Doc. Just because the Doc is out of the country he should be prepared for his patients needs while he is gone. They shouldn't expect you to wait around unitl he returns home just in case something is seriously wrong. Just a thought........

I had a revision Mar 09, due to a fracture at T3. I was origianally fused Apr 08,, but apparently T3 never fused and the screw was too big. All I know about pain was I had two nights of excruciating pain. More pain than the surgery. I also had swelling at the T3 site. I knew something was wrong and called my doctor's office immediately. Hope this helpsl.

                fracture

                Les,

I am so sorry to hear about your fracture. Apparently during my surgery they found my bones to be very small and had to use all pediatric hardware (which they were very surprised to see) to prevent a situation like you are going through. I can't even imagine the pain you poor thing! I wish you all the best in getting better asap!

Hey guys. Its been about a month. I talked to various surgeons on call after I had my "incident." All of them agreed that it was probably just a ligament and since the pain subsided a little by that monday, I could wait until my surgeon got back.
Today was my appointment. I did not pull a screw. I did however, break a rod. After consults with other surgeons, the plan is to wait until my next appointment in October to see if it needs repaired. Everything is still stable. It is broken around the area my hemi-vertebral osteotomy was at. Right now I am getting some stabbing pains still, and when I take a step down off of something with my left foot, my lower right back hurts (the side the rod is broken on). It basically feels like a jolt of electricity.

Sorry I haven't been around lately. There has been a lot going on. I just thought I would let everyone know of the update!

                    Hi Fierce...

Thanks for letting us know the outcome. Your symptoms sound like you may have an area of non-fusion, probably at the osteotomy site.

                    Good luck in October!

                    Regards,
