LOL... the before and after pictures are obviously not the same person.

A lot of people will tell you that they can straighten scoliosis. And, in a way, they can. They just can't do it permanently, unless they happen to be adept at fusion surgery.

Well, the pictures in the second link certainly don't look like the same person (after five years of exercise). Same thing happened with Martha Hawes (who maintains her success with 1 hr of exercise daily per her memoir). Further investigation into the source:

Source: page 133, Lateral Curvature of the Spine and Round Shoulders, Robert W. Lovett, M.D., John B. and Buckminster Brown Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Harvard Medical School. Published 1916, by P. Blakiston's Son & Co., Philadelphia. Third Edition.

a technique that was advocated by orthopedic surgeons in the early 1900s but has unfortunately fallen out of favor in recent decades in favor of surgery and bracing (Quote from the author of the web page - not the Orthopedic Surgeon from Harvard Medical School. One presumes that exercise therapy fell out of favor with the introduction of Harringington rods, without benefit of long term study of either method).

So essentially, exercise had already fallen out of favor by 1916. I didn't realize it happened that early.

        No island of sanity.

Question: What do you call alternative medicine that works?
        Answer: Medicine

Today - from Harvard Medical School (I'm noting the chapter on posture, alignment, and angles).

Of course, as with any exercise routine - one should consult with their physician before undertaking any program.

This of course is not at all what mamamax wrote. She said that the website editor (recently) and not author Lovett (in 1916) wrote that exercise "...had fallen out of favor in recent decades in favor of surgery and bracing."

For instance, in 1947 a physical therapist who had long worked together with an orthopedist in Iowa published her book on treating scoliosis with exercise therapy.
