Congrats on your 10 months anniversary!!! It just seems like a few months ago that it was "your turn"... Is your life pretty much back to normal other than adjustments due to the fusion (like bending...)?

Awhile ago there was a thread on this topic, so I'll put a link to it here. I was working on core strengthening at PT at that time and wrote out some of the exercises and attached them. There are others, of course, but you can try these. They do not put stress on your fusion but still work your core. Some are very easy, others you may have to work up to. And they may not be what you have in mind... The attachment is in post #14. Good luck!!! Susie

      Susie,

Thanks for this, I never found your attachment before. Maybe because when you posted I was pre-op Anyway I noticed at the end there are exercises while laying on your stomach. OMG I still haven't layed on my stomach yet and I'm afraid to try. When did you start? My PT did ask me to try a month or so ago, and I got almost there and said, I just can't do it. It didn't feel right.

Debbe-- Same here! and it still doesn't feel right to me. I'll have to go back into that and see what exercise(s) you're talking about. The only way I could lie on my stomach was without a pillow, and even then it isn't/wasn't at all comfortable. Gotta run now-- I was home for a couple extra hours due to a 2 hour fog delay, but that time's up now.

Also-- my surgeon didn't release me to do any core strengthening until I was 11 months post-op. I'm pretty sure I said that at the beginning of that attachment. I think my surgeon is conservative that way, but I'd rather err on the side of caution....

Thanks susiebee!! i'll look into those.. as for laying on stomach. for the longest time it felt so weird!!! almost like i could feel those things. but i just had to work my way up to it. after awhile it isnt so bad but can still be uncomfortable..

thanks! it seems like yesterday to me as well i can not believe i have come this far! I feel pretty normal now, i can play volleyball and i'm trying to run. Without shock absorbers it feels almost too aqward. but i'm trying!! sometimes i have to remind myself that i do actually have *rods and screw* in my back lol.. then i realize i cant bend some ways! thanks so much for the pt exercises! I'm about to look at them now!

Brittany-- that's great you are able to do so much and feel so good! Ah, youth! I'm trying to remember how long your fusion is, but don't... my pet theory on lying on your stomach is that some of us with really long fusions, especially that go up pretty high, just don't like that feeling that we're trying to bend backwards where we can't bend... That's why I can't have my head on any pillow-- or raise it up at all, if I'm on my stomach. It just feels like I cannot do it, no how, no way!

Debbe-- just skip those exercises-- there are only two of them anyway. Again, I wasn't released to do these until 11 months post op. At 6 months I was able to do arm and leg strengthening-- and those also work some of your back muscles as well. Also-- if you suck in your gut while you do your walking (and other times too) it strengthens your tummy muscles too. Every little bit helps.

It took me about 9-10 months before I would even attempt laying on my stomach. I can do it now, but its not the most comfortable position.
Of course my broken shoulder hasn't helped with that at all.

I took my foam topper and cut it off about 24 inches shorter so my shoulder could hang off the lip. Now, my pillows lay in that area that is 2 inches lower and it really has helped with the neck issues. Being fused up high, you really don't want much lift with the pillows. Now that my shoulder has healed, I think that I will keep my shortened latex foam topper.

Another thing with foam. I have found out that the latex foam (expensive stuff) is way better that the cheap yellow foam. They just aren't the same.

              Congrats Brittany!

                  Hi Ed,

I'm so glad we can always count on you for a good laugh, which by the way helps to strengthen the abs. I love Jim Carey. Thanks.

Regarding sit ups... what about corkscrews, leg circles, single/double leg pulls and planks? (You do them all lying down, except planks, but you don't really use your back for those). Once I get my fusion (T2-L1) in 3 weeks, I am actually wondering if I will be able to do "roll ups" at all.... anyone try roll ups?

You can also try putting a small squishy exercise ball in the small of your back (if you're not fused there) and do crunches that way. I do pilates twice a week and these stomach exercises don't seem to interfere with the back much - or at least the lower back - where your flexibility is. In fact, there is another exercise that might work... caller the "teaser." (http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/vi...ercise-235047/).

You should try the exercises and let me know how they go! I actually work out my abs like crazy, and I am hoping this will help with the recovery!!

I'm not sure what a corkscrew is. I watched that video and there is no way I can do that with a fused spine T3-L3.

                        jess,

You won't be allowed (or FEEL like) rolling up *anything* right after surgery. I'm fused to T4-L1 ... and you should plan on at LEAST 3 months (probably more ... my surgeon released me far earlier than most) before you actually can work your abs properly.

I don't plan on working out my abs immediately after surgery, but hope to get back to doing pilates at 3 or 4 months. Corkscrews actually don't interfere with the back at all, and they are a GREAT ab workout. You just lie down on your back and put your legs straight up in the air, and rotate your legs (together) clockwise, in a big circle. Maybe it involves SOME twisting (minimal) in the lower back area, but I am only being fused to L1, so hoping this won't be a problem. My doctor says he thinks I'll be fine.
