  • So, what do you think?

I have one opinion on a surgical option A/P fusion - Posterior approach done first fusing T3 or T4 to at least L4 but most likely all the way to the tailbone depending on what is found on the MRI. The anterior procedure to fuse lumbar area from the front as well would happen one month later using a cesarean entry. I trust this surgeon, his experience and his team…

So I was wondering if it would be worth considering getting another opinion from Dr. Boachie, even though I am nearly certain that I would not have my surgery at HSS (out-of-network, would have to pay 60% reasonable & customary etc…OUCH!) and would mean delaying any surgery until after the Dr. B. appointment and then another 3 months wait after scheduling with surgeon #1.

    So, what do you think?

    Hi Julie,
Second opinions are probably a good idea, but why waste your time and money going to someone that you couldn't afford to have do your surgery? Check out the SRS website for specialists in your area and then call them to see if they will accept your insurance. Then you could ask on this forum if anyone has had experience with that Doctor. That's what I would do.

If you have any doubt, go get checked by Dr. Boachie. Believe me, it's well worth your time & the cost. Ly

I would go for it, and that is what I did myself. Luckily for me, Dr. Boachie's recommendation matched exactly with my other surgeon's approach.

I went to Dr. Boachie for a third opinion - as soon as he walked into the consultation room I knew he was the one. I concur with Lynn & Debbe that you should get a second opinion, and see what Dr. B has to say; he may be able to recommend another surgeon who is in your insurance network.

I too had anterior and posterior but they were done the same day. Of course there is no "one size fits all" because we all have / had different curves.

As to insurance for Dr. B and for HSS, HSS was contracted with my Blue Cross of CA, so I had full coverage for the hospital. In addition to Dr. B., there were the anesthesiologist, pulmonologist, and possibly others, all of whom were also out-of-network. I decided to just bite the bullet, knowing that while I may not ever be able to afford to renovate my kitchen, at least I would have a very much improved back.
As of 12/25/07, age 62, 100* thoracic kyphosis, 73* L1-S1 lordosis, 37*/25* compensatory S-curve scoliosis. On 12/26/07, Dr. Boachie @ HSS NYC did 11 hours ant. & post. procedures, fused T2-L2, kyphosis now 57*, scoli 10*. Regained 2 1/4 inches in height!! Improving every day.
