Debbe's husband just called. According to the doctor, the surgery was a complete success!!! She is in ICU right now, but she'll go to a step-down unit in a couple of hours. They've already lined up a physical therapist to work with her tomorrow when she gets into a regular room.

The doctor hoped to get a correction equivalent to her bending x-rays. He said that she got at least that level of correction and he's thinking it may be even better.

Apparently, Debbe ordered her husband to call us AS SOON AS he spoke to the doctor. I'm glad we didn't have a misunderstanding and we actually got contacted. (Nancy Joy, I know your hubby tried. He just mixed us up with your work buddies!)

I'm so SO happy for our Debbe who struggled with her fears. Now, she's done and doesn't ever need to do another Fear Rating again!!!

Debbe - Wow !!! I'm so happy for you that all went very well. I know how anxious you were, and then you had those nasty surprises (such as you daughter's "gift from school")on top on the normal worries.

Best wishes for an easy recovery.

Thanks to Ginger and Debbe's hubby for update.

This is Debbe's husband, Mike. I am looking at her on the bed right now. She's taking a nap with a killer headache. She had to spend an extra 24 hours flat on her back because they nicked the spinal cord during the procedure and they wanted to make sure it was repaired/healed sufficiently before she started moving about.

Today the PT folks came by twice. She sat up and stood up the first time, but then they stopped as she was a bit nausious. The second time she took a few baby steps also.

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all of the folks on this board that helped her through what was certainly the the most anxious portion of this whole endeavor. She knew the questions to ask, what to expect and most of all that there were others that have gone through it and are all the better because of it!

As soon as she can sit up long enough to type something out I am certain she'll be online with you!

Thanks so much for the update, Mike!

Her spinal cord being nicked must have given her a fright, but it's good to hear that it's easily fixed. Please tell her congrats on the sitting & the baby steps - it will only get easier from here on in :)

Take care of yourself, Mike.

Thanks Mike, for keeping us up to date with Debbe's recovery.

Very sorry to hear her spinal cord was nicked. It sounds scary but it sounds like it heals quickly?

What you say about this board is so true. Definitely knowing what questions to ask, is very important. I've learned so much here.

Thinking of you Debbe! There are plenty here on this ride with you!

Mike

Remember, these are some pretty tough times for her, and it will be tough for a few weeks. All the things that I wanted right after surgery were simple things like dealing with the folds in the mattress, which can drive a person absolutly MAD. I would wake up and I would be laying on a drain, which is like sleeping on a frying pan. The hoses drive you nuts. Its impossible to try to get a decent sleep. When you wake up from whatever sleep you get, your exhausted.

Its a lot to absorb after scoli surgery mentally and physically.

You will hear her say soon "The old pain is gone" but everything else hurts.

It will only get better

Good luck
Ed

Thanks for the update Mike. We are thinking of you as well as Debbe. I know it isn't easy being the spouse while your wife is having surgery. It is alway such a relief when the surgery is over and you know she made it. I will keep you both in my prayers. Sally
