  • Stomach kinked after having surgery

Hey guys! Have not been here in a while. Skyler had her surgery in May and has done WONDERFUL since then. Except for the past 2 weeks, we have been in and out of hospital and Dr's office. seh has been throwing up and they cannot find out why. Now they are saying that her stomach may have kinked from the surgery? WE are going to see the surgeon tomorrow. Just wondering if any one here has experienced this????

It can happen that the intestines stop working after any type of surgery(it happened to me after a different abdominal surgery). This is called an "ileus"-not "kinking". This can also happen when a person has many abdominal adhesions(scar tissue) after abdominal surgeries. The bowel can get pinched in these.

Frequently the person vomits any food/liquids and then later greenish liquid called "bile" which the gallbladder constantly makes. The treatment involves stopping anything taken by mouth, possibly a stomach tube to drain out the bile and intravenous feeding. There are certain medications which can cause this such as narcotics or antispasmodics. The problem often goes away by itself when the intestines start working again. The doctor will listen to the abdomen for "bowel sounds" and passing gas. Taking any food/drink before that causes the vomiting to resume. The diet is gradually increased when the intestines prove themselves working.
    A surgical consultation is warranted.

The stomach definitely got moved during my daughter's surgery. She only had a sore stomach after surgery and hasn't really had any problems since. But one thing we do notice is that it makes way more noise than it used to. When it gurgles and the room is quiet, everyone can hear it. It never used to do that before. She says she "feels" her stomach more now than before - as if it is closer to the skin surface or something like that...

Well we saw the surgeon yesterday and he said it is Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome. She needs to get on a high calorie diet and gain weight and it will go away. Lots of small high calorie meals. Not alot a one time. So hopefully this is right and ti helps!
