  • 16 months post op MAJOR pain..Help!

Hi all, I have been gone for a while because I have been very discouraged.
I have extensive pain in my r neck and shoulder.. I have been told by one dr that my shoulder blade is prodruding... one dr seems to think that there may be a slight separation of the shoulder.
The pain is sometimes unbearable. I can no longer close or open a card door when I am sitting in the passenger side.. I cannot push heavy doors (ofices, stores etc) with my right side... and I do not have full range of motion ....
I am discouraged because the dr who did the surgery is ref me out to a shoulder specialist and I am afraid they are "covering" for the surgeon.. all the informatio they have is inconlusive... they have decided that it is not the main nerve... now it is like they are shutting me off and saying that nothing is really wrong that I need physical ther...
I work an hourly job and they are all willing to write excuses for "as much time off as I feel I need" ... they tell me that I have been prescribed pain meds... (who around here can actually work w/ Loratab in their system...
I am starting to gt bitter because the pain is bad.... the paychecks are low from missing work and no one seems to want to do any thing..
    does anyone have any suggestions?
PS I went to a separate shoulder specialist an aditional one from the one recomended by the back surgeon reccomended just to see if I got a diff result.... I actully hear some "grinding" sometimes when i move my arm... has this happened to any of you?

Well I remember after my surgery that there were a lot of arm exercises I did with my right arm. So maybe PT will help you out.

Are you getting a burning pain? Or what kind of pain is it? I think almost all of us who have had the surgery get the burning pain, but that does go away with time.

I hope things get better for you.

      I had similar pain

I had shoulder pain like you describe about 12 months after surgery, it lasted a few months then disappeared, but not completely. Although I had high hopes for returning to a physically demanding job after the surgery, it was not to be. I had hoped to return to working in a clinical lab full time, but I know it would be too tiring.

        Hi Paula,
I had surgery Dec '06 and have had shoulder/upper back pain for the last 3 months. Before that I was fine- but I "overdid" it one day doing yard work and I am still paying for it! It does not hurt during the day, just at night when I am trying to sleep. It is getting better but it sure is taking a long time! Don't get discouraged- I think a lot of us have a set back at times.

          Thank You

Thank you all for your responses.
Phys ther went actually pretty well yesterday...
first came the eval.... ---> paula you are very weak.... (well duh, I could have told you that myself!! lol)...
Then I got treated to electrical stim and heat pack.... here I am think... wow this is great!! .... Then I get treated to deep tissue massage... even better...
the grinding sound was actually from muscles that were so tight .... YIKES!!
then... well then came.. now we are going to do some excercises!! (oh oh... please no!!) .... well the lifting of the 2lb weight from my r arm hanging by my side up to horizontal... did not work... could not be done... I was able to lift the 1lb though... I guess it is a start.....
Any way the pain is burning and throbing as well as, sometimes, shooting... and sometimes the pain is all the way up my neck....
Please keep me in your thoughts as I will continue therapy for at least 4 weeks......
Thanks again for all your great insight..
          Paula
