Hi Everyone,

I have done an extensive search on rod removals (postings from 2004-5). I am considering partial/total removal.

I am very curious if those that had these removed have had re-curvature of the spine now that it's been about 3-4 years since. And if you had them removed due to protrusion pain, is the pain now gone???

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated.

:o I don't know how often, but I do know that rods are removed sometimes. I think there are several reasons why rods may be removed. Mine were removed 9 months after they were put in because I took a little fall that shoved the rods up into the cement body cast. At 1st they cut them off 3" & re-packed, the fusion did not take between the shoulders so they took the rods out. However, I was left with that area non fused & went 28 yrs before anyone told me why & that it can be fixed. I don't think that part is normal for most that have rods removed. Once the fusion has taken place the rods are not needed anymore. Anyway that is the way I understand it. Best of luck to you.

My experience:

My original surgery had NO rods--and that fusion weakened over time . So a fused, uninstrumented, spine can lose correction. This has happened to others on the forum.
