  • Seeking an Orlando, FL Specialist

It has been quite some time since I have signed into the NSF forum... and also too long now that I have denied my neccesary visit to see a Scoliosis specialist for an update on my condition.

If anyone out there is in the area of Orlando... could you recommend any of these specialits I found through a Physician Locator?

    1. Jose Herrera-Soto, MD
    2. D. Raymond Knapp, Jr., MD
    3. Jonathan Phillips, MD
    4. Charles Price, MD

I grew up seeing a physician at Vanderbilt in Tennessee... most recently I saw a specialist in Atlanta, GA. Now I have moved to Orlando, FL and haven't seen a physician in nearly two years.
I would appreciate any advice I could get... I am going to try to pick a doctor and make an appointment soon.
    Thanks so much!

Dear H.Ann- What a task! And I'm not from Florida so can't help you out any other than to say that prior to my surgery I read and re-read several times two books on scoliosis. Both of them include choosing a surgeon, so thought I'd pass on what they suggest as necessary criteria which may help you narrow down your choices. First, make sure they are part of your insurance network. They should then meet these other criteria: board certification in orthopedic surgery by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, completed a fellowship in spinal deformities (this means one additional year of training in spinal surgery), an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society--and you can get a listing from them-- (being a member indicates how committed their practice is to scoliosis-usually at least 20% of their practice is devoted to spinal deformity), someone who has been performing spinal fusions for at least 5 years--and specifically fusion for scoliosis correction. One of the books says that unless the surgeon does at least 100 spinal surgeries a year with at least 25-50 of them for scoliosis, to keep on looking...

If you want to read any of these books, they are:
Scoliosis Surgery: The definitive patient's reference by David K. Wolpert and The Scoliosis Sourcebook by Michael Neuwirth, M.D., and Kevin Osborn. I had to order them through Amazon or Barnes and Noble... I can't remember which. They were wonderful in that they give a clear picture of it all.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck!!!

Hi again! I was just "exploring" more areas of this forum and saw in the Physician/Hospital Feedback area that there are some posts about Florida doctors. You might want to go read those. Again, good luck!
