  • Hippotherapy for scoliosis

I have a 21 year old daughter who is diagnosed with a 46 degree lumbar curve and she also has severe MR and mild CP. I would like her to recieve horseback therapy once a week to help in the movement of her back as well as other benefits but the program that she is on will not pay for the sessions unless I can find documented research that hippotherapy will help scoliosis. Has anyone had horse therapy with benefits or does anyone know of research that has been conducted to support this kind of therapy for scoliosis? The new fall session starts in September so I need to come up with this documentation quickly to get her on the program. I hope this forum family can help me!!! Thanks Natalie

    research on hippotherapy

Here are 4 recent studies from the National Library of Medicine showing positive results from such therapy. There are several going back 30 years which I did not read because of time. I only chose the first 4 listed because they are very recent. The authors of the studies are given so that you might be able to contact them for further info.

      Thanks for info

Thank you so much for the information you provided!! I was able to put a nice reseach paper togerther and hopefully it will be enough and the program that Teresa is on will pay for the therapy. She has already been on the horse twice and is throughly enjoying herself. It is a 10 week session and I am very anxious to see how her back seems after 10 weeks. I wish there was more info on adults with scoliosis who had hippotherapy but it mainly focuses on children. (teresa is 21) I will keep you posted with results!! Thank you again. Natalie

There are not as many therapy programs for adults as there are for kids with hippotherapy. The North American Handicapped Riding Association is the national group that actually helps train people to be teachers. There are even some barns that have carriage driving for wheelchair bound people(the carriage is wheelchair accessible)-these however are few. You can get in touch with NAHRA on the web. It is country wide LSH

Multiple sclerosis is NOT the same as scoliosis specially if the child has three or four abnormal curves in the spine .
