    Hi Kara,

From my experiences and what I have observed, the answer is usually they do. The doctor you are seeing for checkups, xrays, etc. would normally be the one performing any surgery you might need.

However, the doctors do work as a team - and let's say the doctor treating you did not have an opening on his surgery schedule for a few months, you could OPT to see if another surgeon was available sooner. So there are instances where a patient COULD end up with another surgeon. BUT you would always have the option of having your own doctor if you prefer. They just offer several alternatives and the patient and their family makes the final decision.

    Hope this helps.

      Shriners drs do

      Hello,

My name is Chesah. I was a patient of Shriners Hospital in Portland, and later LA.

The way that shriners works is since they are a teaching hospital you are seen by many different doctors in the beginning. Once the surgery is decided upon then you are assigned to one of the resident doctors. Mine was Dr. Kribech. He is the best.

I had a 60 degree curve with a 40 degree counter curve. The first surgery took place when I was 14. 2 Herrington rods. The 2nd surgery happened when I was 17. I was having unexplainable pain. They did exploratory surgery to discover the issue. It was found out that the rod was irritating my musle that was on top of it. Once it has been removed no more bizarre twitching and pain.

Dr Kribech did both surgeries on me. He also came to many of the Alaska clinics to see me. Shriners saved my life. I truly do owe them the world. Thank you!!!

I fogot to mention now between the 2 curves it is less than 30 degrees.

        Hi Chesah,

What a great story! As someone who is also gratefule to Shriners, I can tell you I've never seen doctors who care SO much.

There was one parent I heard about who wanted to see Dr. Betz (chief of staff at the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia) but the family lived near Chicago and couldn't travel at that time to Philly. So Dr. Betz agreed to set up an appointment for the week he was visiting the Chicago Shriners Hospital and he saw the patient there.

        Best of luck to you!
