  • Quickly Progressing Curvature

I went for an x ray three months after being diagnosed with scoliosis.

My initial x ray showed a curvature of 13 degrees, and now my second curvature, which was remeasured twice, shows the curve to be at 28.5 degrees.

To me, this sounds rediculous! I have left thoracic scoliosis if that helps any.

What do you think could have caused such a massive jump!?
    My name is Justine
    I am 17 years old
    I live in Canada
    March 2007 - 13 degree curvature
    June 2007 - 28.5 degree curvature
    January 2008 - 27 degree curvature

Are you still growing? Two cm of growth caused a 20 degree increase in my daughter's curve. Left thoracic is less common than right. Have you had an MRI to rule out underlying causes?
God has used scoliosis to strengthen and mold us. He's good all the time!On this forum these larger curves have not held forever in Spinecor, with an initial positive response followed by deterioration. With deterioration, change treatment. The first year she gained 4 or 5 inches and was stable at around 20/20 in brace, followed by rapid progression the next year. She is now 51/40 (Jan2008)out of brace (40/30 in Spinecor) and started at 38/27 out of brace(Jan2006.) Now in Cheneau.

I'm going to be 17, and I haven't grown for about a year now.

I have not got an MRI done as of yet.

When are they doing your MRI? Are you seeing an orthopedic surgeon? What did they say? That is a really large jump for someone that is not growing.

I am still waiting for an orthopedic surgeon. I am hoping that they give me an MRI, but what if they don't? Is there a way that I could request one or something?

I would ask for one. I saw in another post that you also have significant pain, in addition to your rapid increase in curvature. You have a left thoracic curve, which is much less common and may be associated with other conditions. Hopefully, you won't have to cross that hurdle. Are you still having other symptoms?

                    Scoliosisgirl,
Sorry, I was addressing Ballerina. I should have specified.
I missed that you asked about when one stops growing. The age is different for different people.
                    Hugs!

Yes I am still having leg numbness, pain mostly at night and in the morning hours, trouble sleeping at night and no medication has been helping. I was just diagnosed with an under active thyroid, so my doctor said the tiredness should go away within the next few months, but the rest she doesn't know what the cause could be.

How long will it be before you get to see an orthopedic specialist?

Can your current physician order an MRI? I don't know much about the medical system in Canada.

You used to be able to order one through your family physician, but now, because of the huge line ups, they are no longer aloud. It could take 1 month for the specialist to call for the appointment, and a couple of months before my actual appointment.

                              Waiting is the hardest part!
