i go to Miami Childrens Hospital and i've seen Dr. Shufflebarger he does about 300 to 400 surguries a year, so he is experienced. :) i might even have him as my sergeon :D

I had Grady McBride in 1996 do a double rod fusion from T11 to Sacrum. He also fused anteriorly. I had pain for the next 10 years. It started 8 months after surgery and every time I visited him and tried to discuss the problem he slipped out the door. The last time I saw him I positioned myself in the doorway. He suggested my leg pain and inability to walk more than 300 yds was possibly my gallbladder.
I saw him, Dr Bloom of Orlando, and Dr Tall of the Jewett Orthopedic Clinic prior to choosing him for my surgery. They were all superb doctors according to popular opinion.
A year ago a friend of mine had spinal fusion with double rods similar to mine. He is experiencing severe pain 6 months post-op.
Last month I underwent the removal of the rods Dr MacBride inserted. A portion of the 36 piece structure was loose and the nerve that had produced agonizing pain in my right shin was released. (I couldn't even stand the movement of air over the skin my neuralgia was so bad).
Thanks to Dr Micheal MacMillian of Shands Hospital at University of FLorida in Gainesville, I walked over a mile today. He removed the rods and screwed L5 to my hips. I am recovery very well and although I've only had one post-op visit - I have to say I appreciated his bedside manner. According to his crew he has 26+ years of experience and has introduced some innovative successful techniques. If you are interested make an appointment. The best part of the ordeal was I never waited more than 4 minutes for any services: x-rays,CT scans, seeing the doctor. It was very smooth and efficient. note* I recall spending hours in MacBride's office, only to get his attention for 30 seconds.

Hi Kathi, my nam,e is Dava and I live in Miami, and am scheduled for surgery oin Dec. 6 for a 66 degree cruve on my thorsic, they want to fuse from T2 - L1. I am going back to Miami this week to start giving blood and have new cat scan and exrays taken, mine are old, taken in March. I am going to be 65 and, they say the correction will be small but it will stop the progression of the curve. i am very active, golf, exercise, and want to do these things all my life. I am also an artist, painter and photographer. I researched Nathan Lebwohl and actually got another opinion from Dr. Lauerman at G. T. Univ hospital in DC., he confirmed what he would do. I feel that being at home will be better for my self and my husband, then being in another town, even with family around.

Not that this is any of my business, but based on my several years of experience with Dr. Shufflebarger, I would NOT EVER recommend this *doctor* to anyone. I do not want anyone else to have to endure what I have at the hands of this guy. Because of this guys mistakes, noone wants to touch me. Don't believe all the hype you hear about him. Also, just because some do 300-400 surgeries a year, does not always mean that's a *good* thing. Trust me.

1981-Harrington/Luque instrumentation T9-L5 for 30 degree thoracolumbar curve. Dr. Shufflebarger
1990-Revision surgery-Broken hardware/flatback deformity/pseudoarthrosis-Cotrel Dubousett instrumentation with extension into sacrum. (never done correctly) Dr. Shufflebarger
1995-Revision surgery-Severe flatback deformity/kyphosis-Moss Miami instrumentation (T5-sacrum) with titanium cages (back/front/back procedure), thoracoplasty, total reconstruction with osteotomies. (surgeon did surgery while coming down with chicken pox and developed encephalitis with brain damage, etc during 14 hr surgery) Dr. Shufflebarger
2005-Car accident-spinal cord injury/myelopathy from top of rods/hooks at T5. Surgery to remove hardware, with exception of cages. Permanent damage. Dr. Campbell

I went to several orthos over the years from south florida all the way up to north and central florida. i trusted no one but this man for surgeries and i have travelled 1 1/2 hours away to appts to see him. I went as far and to rent a villa for 2 weeks last year for the neck surgery to be close to his office and not travel back and forth for recovery. i have sent my family to him as well and if my kids ever need surgery for the scoliosis they have he will be my choice as well.
