  • Parents sleeping at the Hospital?

How have your parents slept in the hospital with you all? I understand Children's Memorial Hospital has sleeping chairs? Did your parents really sleep there? Was there room for them? Did either parent sleep in the parent lounge while one slep in the hospital room? Did any of you have aunts or other relatives take turns sleeping overnight? I can't imagine what it will be like to sleep at the hospital with Jill for a week?

Hi - each hospital is different. I would call and find out the policy for sleeping arrangements at the hospital Jill will be having surgery. At our hospital, no one is allowed to sleep by the bed in the PICU. There are a few parent rooms outside the PICU for parents to sleep. Hopefully PICU won't be an issue for Jill.

The rules at our hospital are 1 person (preferrably a parent) is allowed to sleep at the bedside. When Braydon has his surgeries (15 so far) my hubby and I take turns sleeping. That kind of helps get caught up on some sleep when you can go outside the hospital to have a rest. I believe very strongly that someone (again, preferrably a parent) stays with the child at all times (minus bathroom and eating trips) so you can make sure she is getting the very best care possible. Please feel free to ask questions about the hospital stay. Hopefully we can help make that part a little smoother for you. Good luck!

When I had my surgeryat 13, the Children's hospital indenver colo, one parent was allowed to stay in the regular rooms. Mom got to sleep (haha) on the padded window sill. The non window bed had a cot for the parent. It was very comforting and very helpful to the nurses for mom to be there.

Our hospital has chairs that convert to beds, and that will be where my husband and I spend our time. My sister has offered and one of my best friends has offered to spell us for a few hours, and we'll take each day as it comes. Thanks for your replies and suggestions.

          Jill K's Mom,
Although I didn't have surgery my doctor told me that if I where to have surgery there , there was like a pull out bed or a cot that my Mom could sleep in.

I would ask the hospital if they have some where you could sleep.

Hi Jill's Mom! Its Charlotte, Jill's friend from this forum.

As you know, I also went to Children's Memorial for surgery. My parents took turns staying with me. They slept on the fold out bed. They also found the parent showers and business center upstairs to be helpful.

By the way, I let my mom know that you want to talk, so she should be contacting you soon.

              Sleeping chairs

Thanks Charlotte, my husband and I are planning on sleeping in the chair/bed and I'm glad to hear your parents found the other amenities so welcoming. When we got our pre-op tour with the child life specialist at CMH they showed us all those options. I told Teresa about you and Jill hooking up in this forum and she was thrilled

My mom stayed with me every night when I was in the hospital. I had surgery at Columbia Presbaterian in NYC. It wasn't a problem there.

My son has had 4 surgeries, in two different hospitals. I roomed in with him for each one. Slept on a cot in one (very comfortable) and a sleeping chair in the other (very uncomfortable!)

I wonder if you would be allowed to bring your own Aerobed? They take up no room at all during the day, and probably take up the same space as the cot/chair bed but would be much more comfortable!

Shifts of people sleeping in might be difficult . . my son only wanted me there when he was small and to tell you the truth I wanted to be there too . . wouldn't have wanted anyone else to take my place.
