Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone knows when they can resume going back to gym work after surgery?

I'm not sure if USA or UK have a program called Curves is a gym program but only a 30 min work out which includes weights and cardio.

Would anyone know when ill be able to go back doing that? I'm 21yrs old as well, if that might make a difference....

Also has anyone heard how Mouna went?

Hi Lee,

I think at your age you will be able to go back to normal activities sooner than us older broads have. Just don't get impatient. You have plenty of time, so let your body heal. The longer the fusion the longer the healing time.

I don't think anyone can give you a set time on when you can return to certain activities, we all heal differently, but the fact that you are so young is definitley to your advantage.

It takes time for the fusion to take hold, and I was told to WALK, WALK, WALK. I completely understand your desire to get back to your normal routines, but after the surgery your body will let you know when it's time.

Hi Lee,

After I finished with my physical therapy (I started it at 4 months.) My therapist came to the gym with me to make sure I was doing things right. This was at my 10 month mark. I was 43 when I had my surgery 13 months ago. I was fused at 9 months per my Dr. but he wanted me to hold off on most activities till my 1 year mark. Then I promptly went snow skiing! He doesn't want me to ever water ski again but has not said no to anything else. He didn't seem to like it when I asked him at my 1 year appt. when I could ride roller coasters. He asked "must you?" He wants me to wait till 2 years, I might.......... At the last scoliosis support group meeting I attended the Dr. (A local spine specialist.) was talking to a 16 yr. old concerned when he could play basketball post-op. He was told around 6 months. Younger scoliosis patients heal much faster like Shari said. Hope this helps.

Here's another question about post-op activities. Do you think I will be able to teach for 4 hours at a time when I'm 3 months post-op?

I can sit - I don't have to be at the board the whole time.

I was 30 when I had my surgery. At 4 months post-op, my Ortho told me that I could begin swimming & riding a stationary bike but I was nervous and opted for PT. In PT I rode the stationary bike, used the eliptical, pull bar and free weights and did squats using a Total Gym. I tried using an exercise ball, but I didn't feel confident enough on it. I did felt great after just 6 weeks of PT though.

Hi Anya...

You really should check with your surgeon about these issues. With that said, I have a page on my website about returning to activities:
