Can anyone recommend a good kyphosis specialist in or around Philadelphia? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm currently seeing Dr. Fras at the University of Pennsylvania. You can look him up here http://pennhealth.com/WagForm/MainPa...r&P=PP&ID=9634

He's really nice and seems to enjoy sitting and talking to me. At my first appointment, he asked me questions for over 20 minutes. I could barely believe it. No doctor has ever paid that much attention to me. He does treat kyphosis, but I see him for scoliosis. The only downside is, if you go to see him, is that you normally have to wait over 90 minutes past your appointment time until you actually see him. I think this is because he likes to talk with his patients. If you go to him, try to make your appointment as early in the day as possible so you don't have to wait.

I went to the Rothman Institute affiliated with Jefferson and Had a good outcome. I didn't have kyphosis I had a lumbar curve but there are many specialists there.

          Thanks, everyone, for your replies.

Briarrose, I actually did see Dr. Fras a little over a year ago. He was very nice. I made an appointment with him because I hadn't had my back checked in about 8 years and I wanted to make sure things hadn't gotten worse (I have mild Scheuermann's kyphosis and scoliosis). He took x-rays, but he didn't even seem to notice my kyphosis. My 17-degree scoliosis curve was the same as it had been in 1998 so he told me not to worry about it since I have no pain.

I told him I also had kyphosis, but he thought everything looked fine. The kyphosis bothers me a lot because it's cosmetically unattractive. I look like I'm slouching even when I try to stand perfectly straight. I hesitate to go back to Dr. Fras because I don't want to be told I don't have kyphosis when I know that I do. Maybe it was the angle of the x-rays that was the problem?

Not that I even know what I want to hear.... I doubt any expert would recommend surgery because my kyphosis is not severe nor does it cause pain.

Hi. I understand your hesitation to go back to him if you had that experience. I've had similar experiences too. He seemed really concerned about my back and wants to do surgery, but wants to watch it for a little while longer. I hope you can find a good doctor.
