These injections are given under deep sedation so you do not feel them; they serve 2 purposes: pain relief for a period of time and a diagnosis of which nerve branches are affected. The doctor, usually a pain specialist, uses fluoroscopy to visualize the correct spot.
I have worked with these cases in my profession on a regular basis.

Karen,
If your under deep sedation, how are they able to find out where the pain is coming from?

You tell the doctor the general area where it is before the procedure; sometimes he will press around your back and you tell him where it hurts.
