  • Scoliosis and other conditions (skin, nails, etc)

    Hey guys!
I've been reading everything I can about scoliosis and the nutritional/hormonal correlations, etc. My girlfriend has a 21 degree curvature at 20 years old. Her parents wouldn't even send her to a doctor for it when she was diagnosed at 13. I know there's not a whole lot they could have done, and its not a major curve in the grand scheme of things. But what I wanted to know is...

Has anyone here with Scoliosis noticed any of the following symptoms, which she also has:

-- Mysterious white "rash" that spreads from back and elbows over shoulders, stomach, entire back, hips. Not Tinea or other fungus, doesn't respond to eczema meds. Worse in heat.

-- Bad body temperature control, especially hot at night. Requires a fan blowing to circulate air. Also gets cold easily though...

-- Peeling fingernails, but not toenails

-- Occasional burning around rim of mouth

-- Heart murmur every 30 minutes or so

-- Horrible immune system since she was young(somewhat corrected that by getting her on some supplements-Carlson ACES+Zn and Kyolic Garlic).

I've just switched her to a multimineral that will handle the calcium/magnesium, and a separate Vitamin D 2000 from Carlson. I work at a hospital, and the word is that the FDA recommended daily VitD dose is changing from 400 to 2000, with the max going from about 2000 to 6000. Anyway, thanks for any thoughts you can provide, I just want to see her healthy and happy!

Sounds somewhat similar to me... I have congenital kyphoscoliosis (21* scoli, 43* kypho - my hunchback is much bigger than my scoliosis) that wasn't detected until 27, so I'm in a similar boat.
I have had big muscular issues, and we're pretty sure they're pinching nerves in my neck/shoulders, so a lot of my issues come from there, including the temperature control and the occasional racing heart. I also get migraines, muscle spasms and nausea from there.
That said, I also have a horrible immune system. I was diagnosed asthmatic at six, have had pneumonia twice, and still suffer from hayfever and sinus infections. If the 'white rash' is peeling skin, it is quite possibly something known as 'asthmatic eczema'. I've had it for years. It's apparently common amongst asthmatics only, and responds to a cream containing steriods/cortizone (so you sure don't use much of it if you can!)
Any, if she hasn't been completely physically checked out since her scoliosis was discovered, I'd do it. I've learnt so much more about what causes my body to produce the symptoms it does and how it reacts to certain situations since I was diagnosed, simply by continually asking different people and trying different things - it's definately a learning curve!
Hope you have some luck, anyway!

Vit D(calcium too) and bone strength/weird symptoms

        antsin3d:
I never had the symptoms your girlfriend has and I had a really severe curve.

Text from the FDA's recommendations for calcium and Vit D:

        http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dai...01-02-vol1.pdf

Because I was interested in keeping my bones strong and thus support my hardware I visited a metabolic bone specialist and had my Blood Vit D measured.
Sure enough my Vit D stores(in the body) were low. She recommended taking 1800 IU(international units--NOT milligrams or micrograms). I was measured over a period of months until it normalized. I now take 1200u a day. My bone doctor said it was basically impossible to get enough from food and recommended I use a supplement(it's very cheap). However she told me not to go over 2000u because we do not know, in the long run, risks vs benefits.

I asked why my vit D levels were low. She said we do not get enough sun because of sun blocker, staying indoors and reduced absorption due to age.
        Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction

Thanks for the replies amigos! The steroids don't get rid of the white rash, but we noticed that the two times that the chiropractor moved her lower spine into a straighter position the spots seemed to reduce in intensity until she popped back out of place again(very unstable back there, but we're fixing that with supplements/stretching/exercise). I'll keep you posted, it would certainly be interesting if all these different ailments really are connected at the end of the day
