  • Just recently diagnosed - would like some input

Hello all, I started working on computers about 12 years ago. Prior to that I was a T-shirt printer who spent most of my work time on my feet. I used to do all the artwork traditionally with a pen & a knife etc but dicovered how quickly and accurately computers could help me do the artwork so I naturally moved into that area. Now I've worked on computers for way too many hours a day and have not really taken much notice of the increasing bend in my neck.

At the beginning of this year I developed a sore throat that just wouldn't go away. I was working close to 16hrs a day sitting in front of the screen.
Being a heavy smoker - both of Cigarettes & Marijuana for over 20 years, the immediate thought was some sort of throat cancer.

After a battery of tests & 6 weeks later no cancer could be detected. I had lived during that time thinking this would be the last year I would spend alive and was so scared - (my own business was just picking up & my 2 boys had started to live with me - everything was coming together) so I made a decision to stop all smoking. I've been successful in stopping the smoking but am still on nicotine patches to help me through. I plan to stop these soon.

The thing is that I still get this very sore throat almost on a daily basis and even though I've seen almost every type of specialist known to man, the diagnosis is severe laryngitus. I'm now starting to realise this has alot to do with my posture as I work, & the scoliosis I now have. I've also found out about the Alexander Technique & the whole history of where it originated (very similar to my own condition)

I now have a small mirror just below my monitor to help remind me to hold myself in a straighter position and am excercising daily (2 mile walk & skaeboarding each day with the boys) to maintain my core strength. I am currently also doing some yoga /stretching excercises twice daily in the belief that I have caused this condition through bad posture & can therefore get some control if not help my spine return to a much straighter shape.

Any comments / advice would be much appreciated as to help me to get a handle on all of this
