  • i feel so ugly

hi, im a 23 year old with "mild" scoliosis, but what bothers me even more is that i have winged scapula from mild pectus excavatum. they stick out and look ugly. also my neck/ back symmetry is just off.
I feel it takes away from my looks so much.
is there any surgery or anything i can do??

    Hi Laura,

Welcome i can't really help you with what you have but i've got scoliosis my upper curve is 50 degree and my lower curve is 40 - 50 i've never had surgery and im 21yrs old but im actually going to see my specialist next monday to find out if its progressed. I had is checked 6 yrs ago so its been a while.
What are your curves like? And are they progressing?
The best thing to do is maybe see a specialist have you done that? Where abouts are you from?

I live in Ontario Canada, and I have never seen a specialist, i dont even know where to look.
The reason i know i have this is because of my chiropractor and it looks ugly.

how do i find a specialist?

Go to www.scoliosislinks.com and there are a list for all american and canadian specialist. Even ask your chiropractor im sure he can refer you too someone. In Australia you need to get a referral from your doctor first don't know what its like in Canada.

Laura, I would suggest going to see an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in Adult Scoliosis. A chiropractor can detect curves like yours did, but studies have not been shown to have them fix curves or hold them in one place. It is important to find out how big your curve is and make sure that there is no underlying cause for it.
Hope you find a surgeon in your area and that you begin to feel better about yourself. You look like a beautiful young lady, and if you wouldnt have said anything, I wouldnt have noticed.

            Laura,
You are beautiful! Sarah Michelle Gellar has scoliosis, too.You really can't tell. No one would ever know you have it either. Get a specialist to check you out(orthopedic) and measure your curve. Ask him the degree of your curve and where it is located. Even your chiro should be able to measure your curve and tell you the location. There are thoracic curves, thoracolumbar, and lumbar curves. Thoracic is in the area of the chest and involves ony thoracic vertebrae, thoracolumbar is, I think, just above the waist and maybe in the waist combining both thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, and lumbar is in the lower back and only lumbar vertebrae. Some people have a combination of curves. The vertebrae are numbered. T1 to T12 and L1 to L5(I think it is something like that)Hope this helps!
            Hugs!
God has used scoliosis to strengthen and mold us. He's good all the time!On this forum these larger curves have not held forever in Spinecor, with an initial positive response followed by deterioration. With deterioration, change treatment. The first year she gained 4 or 5 inches and was stable at around 20/20 in brace, followed by rapid progression the next year. She is now 51/40 (Jan2008)out of brace (40/30 in Spinecor) and started at 38/27 out of brace(Jan2006.) Now in Cheneau.
