  • Pinched nerves

Has anyone dealt with pinched nerves from scoliosis successfully? I have been diagnosed with illiotibial syndrome, but now I'm thinking that the pain and numbness in my thigh is coming from compression in my back. Anyone else dealt with anything like this?

Sure, in my neck, thoracic spine, legs...

Exercises(like walking and swimming), PT and ice packs help. Good posture and sitting in a good chair and not a low couch for example helps even more, in my case.

I have nerve compression due to herniated discs. I have tried epidural injections, therapy and a chiropractor. Nothing has worked for me. Hopefully surgery will. I am getting surgery in Sept which seems to be approaching quickly.

I have anything up to four pinched in my neck and shoulders, causing what we believe is occipital neuralgia (i.e. shoulder/neck muscles spasms causing big, bad, disabling migraines and constant tension headaches).
I have to go along with what Sweetness said here - walking and swimming are the way to go, particularly when coupled with proper physical therapy. The three of these put together are slowly working out the pinches for me, and reducing my muscle weakness to boot.

I'm seeing a chiropractor about the pinched nerve. For those of you that have had PT, what did they do? What kind of exercises did they suggest? I'm trying to lose wt. and right now I'm doing nothing aerobic due to the pain in my thigh. Also, anyone with a pinched nerve have some swelling along the pain site?

A physical therapist would likely put you on either a yoga or pilates program. Both are good - there are people on here that would swear by either of them!
As for swelling, I do seem to have my neck and shoulders become inflamed when things are turning the worse. Anti-inflammatories seem to calm things down for me, so I guess there must be swelling involved somewhere!

              Inflammation

Icing, acupuncture and massages help a lot as well, I find.

Could you please tell me more about your accupuncture experience? I have never tried it and I'm not thrilled about all of those needles, but I'm looking for any answers. I e-mails a local yoga teacher and she teaches Kundalini Yoga and she thinks it can help me. Along with my pinched nerve problem, I have a torn rotator cuff and am starting PT for that on Friday, so right now I really can't do any exercise except maybe walking. Thanks for any suggestions.

                  Acupuncture

In my case, it only helps where I don't have hardware. The places I have hardware I find that everything I do to relieve inflammation around it makes it worse, but anyway from what I read you don't have implants and that is not a problem.

Like going to a chiro, a good acupuncture specialist will tell you to try it 3-4 times and see if it helps, and if not to stop an try other things. I make sure that they have new neddles everytime and not the washable ones, as I don't take any chances that way(infections, etc). It really helped with my pinched nerve in my necks and higher thoracic spine, especially all the nerve pain that was going down my right arm and fingers as well. The needles are not big, and if the person is used to doing it, it is like a small pinch, that's when and if you feel it. They also do massages and after a session I felt numb, so relaxed. They have a warming machine that attaches to the needles(not sure about the name) they can only use on people without implants, and so maybe they will use that on you if you decide to give it a try. My insurance covered most of the cost for a while, and then they stopped so I'm not sure if yours would.

Thanks for the wonderful information about accupuncture. I never really knew what they did. I'm just getting started with my chiropractor, but she is not the type to keep me coming for a long time if it's not working. I have never had surgery. I have been blessedly out of pain for about 10 years. It was a chiropractor that got me pain free at that time plus swimming. Now I have developed rotator cuff problems and this terrible pain in my thigh. I saw an ortho who sent me to PT. They finally gave up on me, so I tried this chiro. I start with a new PT today for my rotator cuff and have had a few chiro adjustments for the leg. It seems a little better, but we shall see. I was lifting weights and using a treadmill and was losing weight nicely, but I'm not sure I will be able to go back to that. I'm looking in to yoga. Good luck with the accupuncture. Keep us posted.
