  • scoliosis and arthritis cause of miscarrage?

I had harrington rod placement in jan. of 2002, and in sept. or the same year i was told i have osteo arthritis. In april of 2005, a lump appeared on my incision, and has been a hole, opening and closing ever since. i've recently been told that i may have MRSA, or rod rejection, or just an infection. In september of 2005, I found out i was pregnent. 8 weeks later, i had a miscarrage. does anyone think that i had the miscarrage due to all the problems with my back? I've been wondering about that ever since. Thanks for all your help and time.

    Hi Water...

Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I doubt that anyone can tell you what caused it. Miscarriage is pretty common, so it could have been caused by just about anything.

Do you know for a fact that your rods are Harrington rods? Harrington rods have only rarely been used (at least in the U.S.) since the 1990's. More modern rod systems are used these days. One way or the other, you need to get the infection/rejection thing figured out quickly. What is your specialist recommending?

    Regards,
    Linda

Had miscarriages with scoliosis without fusion

      Dear Waterpixie,

So sorry to hear about your miscarriage. Only someone who has also had one (like me) realizes what a heartbreak and loss they are. I hope you have people whom you can talk to about it.

Probably you'll never know for sure what caused it. I had three miscarriages in a row between my second and third child. They were all at 3-4 months. Most likely you will be able to go on and have more children.

The important thing right now is to take care of yourself--find out what is going on with your back and get it treated. Let us know how you come out with this!

Thank you guys so much. Everyone here has been so helpful.
Yes, my rods are harrington rods. My surgeon told me before I even had the surgery that's what they are. And he told me afterwards, and it's in my records. I didn't take the time tor research it though. Stupid me. Now, my surgeon wants me to "maybe" have a 2nd surgery to take the rods out. I hear a lot of bad stuff about it, and I've heard a couple of good things too. But, I just have to keep faith, and look at this from a positive perspective. my whole story is in the forum : Surgical (Revision), and the subject is, "Help, many questions about 2nd surgery" if you want to know more. It's a long story and it hurts to type for so long.
Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it.

          Hi Water...

I'd really like to encourage you to get a second opinion from another scoliosis specialist. It sounds like you're near Buffalo or Rochester. Here are some doctors to check out:
          Christopher Hamill, Buffalo
          Cameron Huckell, Buffalo
          Robert Lifeso, Buffalo
          Robert Molinari, Rochester
          Glenn Rechtine II, Rochester
          Paul Rubery Jr, Rochester
          Edward Simmons, Buffalo
          Gary Tebor, Rochester

It certainly sounds like you have a raging infection. Between the fact that you have Harrington rods, and your surgeon is not rushing you back into surgery, I'm concerned. I am not a medical professional, but I've known more than a few people who have had late onset infections. And, if you truly have Harrington rods, I'd want to know why they were used instead of much more modern implants.

I hope you'll see someone soon.

          Regards,
          Linda

            Water,
You REALLY, REALLY need to be seen AND get a second opinion very soon! One of the docs that Linda cited would be a great choice.

I'm one of many on this fourm that had MRSA, post 4 months after my intial surgery. It needs to be treated as of yesterday

Thanks for the Specialists. I am right smack dab in the middle of Rochester and Buffalo!!!! The only bad thing, is my specialist is Dr. Gary Tebor. So, advice to everyone- DONT SEE TEBOR!!!! I will get a 2nd opinion though. On a good note, I was waiting for my medical insurance to be approved, and I just recieved it today. YAY. That takes a little weight off my shoulders anyway. Atleast I can get it taken care of. I'll ask Tebor why I had Harrington Rods placed also. Thanks for the advice!!!
