  • Vacation anyone?

Hello guys, its been a while and the surgery date is fast approaching. I was wondering though my husband and I were going to take the family to Florida in February of next year and my mom brought up the point that would I feel up to it at 6 1/2 months post op. It's a lot of money to go on a nice vacation and not be able to keep up with the kids at Disney, rides, walking all day....Has anyone else done this and how do you who are 6 months out feel. Could you do Disney for the day and live to enjoy the rest of the week? Thanks Alissa

    Alissa,

I had one of my surgeries in August of last year. WE had a trp planned to orlando Jan 1-8. I was able to go and did just fine. It is alot of walking (i mean alot of walking!) so you will have to sit down and dont over do it. The only thing that i can say bothered me was going on the space mountain ride. I should have not gone on it but i did and it was very jerky and did irratate my back afterwards. All the other rides were ok for me. There was one ride at epcot also that I did not ride, but i cant remember the name. I would suggest you just pay close attention to your body and how you feel and determine if you can ride the rides.
Another thing that kinda bothered me was the plane ride. We flew from california to flordia and had a layover in texas. I was ready to stretch my legs in texas.

I would say you will be fine after 6 mths. Now this was my 4th surgery. Im not sure if this was your first surgery or not. This was my 4th surgery so i recover pretty fast. Actually I was able to board a plane and fly to chicago after 1 mth of surgery.
I hope this helps you. Have fun. Walt disney world is a fun place but just remember it is alot of walking!!
Oh ya, one more thing we went with our family and my brother in law had just had knee surgery like 2 mths earlier and we told them that we had a hard time walking that far for parking and if we could park up front in the disabled parking and they let us. WE didnt have to have a sticker or anything. This may be good for you so you can save your energy for the parks!

      Hi...

I would recommend that you talk to your surgeon about going on ANY ride 6 mos. post op.

I don't know about riding the rides but as far as walking, you can rent a scooter there, like the wheelchair types, and ride that around if you get tired. It's also handy if you have a small child with you as they will no doubt get tired from walking too.

I went to Disney last year (pre-op) and used a scooter to get around and I was glad I did. That place is too huge for healthy people to walk without getting wiped out.
By the end of the day, my friends 5 year old son was on my lap sleeping as we rode out of the park.

Curve post op = 20 degrees
          No pain anymore!!

I personally couldn't ride roller coasters-b/c of ortho's restrictions AND pain- or even walk for hours and hours 6 months after surgery, but that's my experience and we all heal differently, and I was 26(young).

So IMO I would wait and see how you do and then you can evaluate if your body is ready for it, but riding roller coasters less than a year post op is usually a no-no.

              Hello Alissa,

My husband and I took a vacation to San Fransisco with all of my siblings and their spouses at 5.5 months post-op. I'm fused with titanium rods from T-9 to L-5 and I had a birthday while there...43 yrs old. I did great. I walked all day taking in all the sights, rode in tour buses, rode the ferry, went to Alcatraz, and even rode a horse drawn buggy. I would get tired by the end of the day, but all my siblings were also tired...afterall, those hills are bigger than life when you see them up close. I didn't have any small children to keep up with....and that is where the difference is probably going to be with you. I don't think at 6 months I could have walked all day and looked after children. I think you should talk with your surgeon...and I don't think you or your surgeon can be 100% sure until you see how your recovery is going.

For me, the trip to San Fransisco did me so much good physically(the walking was a good thing) and it certainly helped me mentally. What a beautiful place. San Fransisco has been my favorite vacation of all times.

I left my heart in San Fransisco!

              Kindest Regards,
              Gail
