  • spondylolisthesis....anyone have this as well as scoliosis?

Since in my case they both require surgery, I am wondering if they can both be done at the same time. I will ask the doctor when I finally get in to see him, but curious if anyone else has had to deal with this problem.

I also have spondylolisthesis. When I am fused in May, I will also undergo a lumbar laminectomy to correct the stenosis caused by the spondylolisthesis caused by the scoliosis, caused by the spina bifida.....

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

I am sure in my case the scoliosis came much before the spondylolistheses.

I never knew what a siatic nerve was until a little over a year ago when my pain became very uncomfortable most every day.

I've had scoliosis that was diagnosed by the school nurse when I entered jr. high. I wore a Milwaukee brace for 3 years. Then I basically put up with having a curved back and difficulty finding clothes to hide my deformity. I married and had two children and never had my scoliosis checked again for many many years.

Then in the past 7 or 8 years I started getting shorter and shorter. Finally when I had lost 3 inches in height I quit stalling, went to a doctor who scolded me severely for not doing anything. He sent me to a spine specialist who measured my curves at 70° upper and 78° lower back.

It was the new pain from the spondylolisthesis that sent me to the doctor in the first place a few weeks ago. Only I had never heard of spondylolisthesis until that visit.

I hope to keep up with your surgery as it sounds like I'll have similar....at least I hope it can all be done at once for me.

And.....best wishes for a successful surgery! You made me laugh a little because I have been having hamstring problems and after reading some posts find that that is something that happens with people who have spondy....one thing leads to another, which leads to another, etc!

      Thanks for your response.

Shame on that doctor for scolding you severely! What did he expect you to do? I'm your age Marcia and I never sought medical treatment for my scoliosis (after I was told in my 20s that there was nothing that could be done) because I never had problems until this past year. And, unfortunately, outside of drastic and risky surgery, what other choices do we have?

          Chris & Marcia,
I never had my scoliosis checked after wearing the M. brace at 15-16 until I was 43. The doctor I saw said nothing could be done & I should have done an operation at 16.....Hard to hear when you are in your 40's!! We should all be very thankful that there is something that can be done... risky yes but from reading this forum it seems that most come out of it for the better!!!! my good wishes are with you both!! Lynne,

And if you had had an operation when you were 16 with implantation of Harrington rods (the only treatment of choice 30 years ago), you'd probably be looking into revision surgery today. So at least now, you won't require having to have an old fusion cleaned out.

Chris-that's a good point & one I've thought about. My curves were around 37-40 then & I was fine. so happy my parents did'nt go w/the surgery then. I was thinking today as my 2 boys ran circles around me, that I'll be thankful just to walk with them & not be in pain or discomfort in the future. I'm doing this surgery to make 'me' better for all of us. Looking at them, I do get scared quite a bit about the risk factor involved...but the pluses out weigh the minus's. As Gail on the forum(I love to read her comments) said...you put it in God's hands from here.........Ly my faith has gotten much stronger..

Okay, here's my two cents worth. My daughter, age 14, has Scoliosis, Kyphosis and spond. We never knew about the spond. until they started treating her for the Kyphosis and Scoliosis. Thankfully, she has never had any pain from any of them. So, I don't really know which she had first.
