My son Joe is 16 1/2 years old. He has Scheurmann's Kyphosis (around 50 degrees now which is OK) and Idiopathic Scoliosis (started at 28 degrees in 7th grade, progressed to 38 degrees in 10th grade and up to 47 degrees this fall.)
We went back in a 4 month window to see the orthopaedist and to monitor the rapid progression in his curve. His curve measured at 42 degrees, so maybe a little less than in the fall which was good news. Had it progressed, we would be looking at surgery.
Doctor thought that he may well have stabilized now and will see him again in August. If he stays at 42 degrees, he will return in another 12 months and if he stays at 42 degrees then, he is done!
Joe has worn a backbrace at night for the past year, even during the period where it progressed from 30's into the 40's. We are hoping that it has stabilized at 42 degrees and he is continuing to wear the brace faithfully. He also did PT in the summer/fall and continues to do the exercises and keeps very physically active.
