Hi

Does anyone know of Dr. Cammisa from the Hospital of Special Surgery NY? If so, what is your opinion of him?

Thanks
Sue

Yes, I do know of him. When I had the top of my rod removed at HSS, he was partners with Dr. Harvinder Sandhu (my doctor); they have since gone separately with their practice. I have never been seen by him so I can't help you with an opinion. From what I remember, he is not a scoliosis specialist. If you are looking for a scoliosis specialist, Dr. Boachie-Adjei is by far the best. He is also at HSS. Take care, LYNN

I heard he is number one for scoliosis, but he doesn't take my insurance. For an out of the network doctor - after I pay a $3,000 deductible, my insurance will only cover 70% of the bill. I don't know how much he charges for surgery, but I heard it can up to $100,000, I can't afford the 30%. I have contacted all of the doctors considered to be top scoliosis doctors in New York City and they don't take insurance either. I am going to have to suffer with the pain and become disabled.

Suzyjay,
Don't give up ...yet...
I don't know what your insurance is(mine is Aetna ppo) I am planning on surgery w/ Dr. Boachie this August. The office sent in a predetermination to my ins. co about 4 wks ago & I was planning to call & check today on it. My understanding is for my policy, it is 70/30 but there is a max out of pocket of 4250. so do check with your insurance policy. what is it? Dr. Boachie has a great staff & they can answer your insurance questions..

I have United Healthcare POS. United Healthcare told me after I pay the deductible of $3000 they cover 70% of the expenses.

No, not for doctors out of the network. If I use a doctor in my network, my out of pocket is $250.00 and then they pay 100%.

It should be noted that the 70% out-of-network coverage is 70% of reasonable and customary charges. If the doc charges 30 and United Healthcare says it's only worth 20, then they will only pay 14 which is less than half. Most doctors will work with you to a certain extent but you really do need to do that predetermination so you know what to expect. Pick the best surgeon that you can at all afford. Good luck.
