  • Scoliosis, Back pain, HELP!!!

Hello... I am almost 32 years old and found out that I had Scoliosis when I was 18 only due to a chest x-ray that I had to have since I have asthma. I was told to go to a specialist on spinal disorders by my doctor. When I was seen by the neurologist and orthopedic doctor, they both told me that since I had already stopped growing that my scoliosis was not treatable. Now I have a double s curve. Not sure the degree I think around 45 degrees on my thoracic spine. I also have a curve on my lumbar spine too. I have severe pain in my lower back and mid back at all times. I am starting to have pain in my shoulders and hips. It is very frustrating. Been going to chiro but doesn't seem to help much. Is there anything that I can do for the pain. I also have osteoarthritis in my spine. My curves are not getting any better and by the xrays are getting worse. I do a lot of lifting in my job and I don't know how long I can go on working. What about disablity... How hard would it be for me to get that.. I need some help on what I can do... I really hurt.. Bad

you need to go and see an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in untreated adult scoliosis. they will take xrays, assess you and your curves and discuss possible treatment with you. i don't know what the score is with disability allowance for you as i live in the UK but i have to say i don't think scoliosis sufferers here are entitled to it because so many people suffer and in most cases it's also treatable
    diagnosed aged 14 (2001)
braced from july 2001 to february 2003 to hold curves
    fused T11-L3 on july 16th 2005 (aged 18)
Discharged by surgeon july 11th 2007 (aged 20 and almost 2 years post-op)

I have been to an ortho.. Last May... Said that the only way they would treat it is I am unable to get out of bed cause of the pain. He just wanted to control it with mobic or something like that. But that doesn't help at all. So I just don't know what to do

        misinformation!!!

Where do you live? You must see an adult SCOLIOSIS specialist. A regular ortho will not help.

I had successful surgery at age 60. You can get excellent recommendations from people on the forum. Waiting until you cannot get out of bed is CRAZY. A successful outcome is helped by being in the best physical condition.

I am afraid the info you got is very out dated.

        Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction

I live in Oklahoma. Have searched everywhere in Ok for a specialist. I can't seem to find one anywhere near. When that ortho said that, I was really discourged and didn't think that he cared much. He is a specialist on the spine but I was so disappointed. Been going to chiropractor now just 3 times. Back seemed to pop out of place again tonight.. OUCH!!! Does that hurt. Could you help me find someone that could help me?
