    Hi Ken...

I had DDD in my lumbar spine before my surgery. Most adults over the age of 40 with lumbar curves have DDD, which is what drives them to have surgery. What questions do you have?

      Ddd

      Linda,
If degenerative disc disease is common with most adults- what about stenosis? Is that a common disease? Or is it mostly seen in the older adult- 60's up? Just wondering.
      Thanks!

Hi Linda, When you say (drives them to have surgery) are you referring to having surgery after being fused for scoliosis years later? My orig surgery for Herrington Rods was in 84 - now the lower back pain gets so intense - the doctor says its DDD and herniated discs, but that I should just live with it! I'm wondering if anyone has had to have surgery in a similar situation as mine and if so - did it help? Is it worth the risks? I'm only 37 with 3 kids!! Thank you - any info would help...

          Hi CSC...

I don't have a clue about the statistics, but I think stenosis in the lumbar spine is fairly common in people with lumbar scoliosis.

            Ken...

No, I think in general, people with scoliosis, especially those with lumbar scoliosis, have a high incidence of DDD. It may be more common in people with prior fusions, but I don't know that as a fact. I think you need to find a scoliosis specialist who has a lot of experience with treating patients with prior fusions.

Hi Ken, I haven't had surgery but I have a very bad disk in my low back which I made worse with an injury, and I was in intense pain until I got significant relief from Amitryptilene (sp?). I think it's a bit of an old-fashioned drug but it worked (works) for me when a lot of other drugs didn't. Might be worth a try while things get sorted out, if you haven't tried it already. I am also just 30 and living with low back pain is a mess. But there is relief out there, you just have to find the right combinations. Don't give up. All the very best.

                  Hi Ken...

The only surgeon I know much about in Southern California is Behrooz Akbarnia in LaJolla. He's had excellent training, and is a really nice human being.

                  Regards,
