My lungs were definitely compromised based on my pre-op respiratory tests and the cardiologist's report. I also have a slight leak in my mitral valve.
The thing is, I got the surgery BEFORE it got worse.
It took a good 2 1/4 years for my lungs to recover-but they did. I had lost some lung tissue before surgery from my misshapen ribs.
A hopeful thing is that, given the room, lungs can expand. In the case of a person who loses a lung, because of lung cancer. That person's remaining lung will grow larger.
