  • Body piercings?

I tried doing a search and have not found anything regarding people with piercings pre-op.

I think I read somewhere that you have to take them out for an MRI and can use fishing line or something to keep the holes from closing.. but what about the surgery itself?

Did anyone lose all their piercings?

I have a feeling that maybe no one wrote about it but I have a feeling I'm not the only one with piercings on here

I think I remember seeing something about that in the adolescent postings, but it was quite a while ago.

The only piercings I had when I had my major back surgeries was my ears. I took them out for the procedure and put them back in about a week later. I had a more minor surgery and I did have to take out my tongue and belly rings. I lost the belly ring after that, but it wasn't a good peircing so I'm not sure how much the surgery really had to do with it's closing. I still have my tongue ring. I had had it for many years before this surgery so it wasn't in much danger of closing. Depending on how big the piercing is they do make "spacers" to fill the hold...but it has to be a larger gauge. So, I would think that if you can take out the piercing for the MRI and the actual surgery, I'm sure that you can replace them after a few days out of surgery. I'm sure that your Dr. can tell you also. Hope that helps.

        piercings/surgery

Metal of any type is not allowed during surgery.

The reason is that an electric cautery is used to control bleeding. Burns can occur at the piercing sites if the piercings are left in.

A tongue ornament can be dislodged and end up in the lungs as well as break teeth under anesthesia. Piercings as well as other jewelry can catch on hospital linens and gowns getting ripped out as well as being lost or stolen. I lost a diamond stud earring while working when it apparently got caught in the paper hospital cap hat I wore at work.

As an aside; dentists say tongue jewelry eventually weakens and can break front teeth.

If you go to a piercing specialist they have plastic bars etc which can be inserted which are suitable for mri scanning. this is what I did with my piercing and then changed it back after the scan.

          hope this helps

            Thanks everyone for responding.
My piercings are pretty old so it should be alright if I have them out during the surgery I guess. And I'll look into getting some plastic rings or bars for the MRI
