  • Veterans carrying weight on same side?

Ever any research on causation from extended consistent weight carrying always on same side? Or on GI's?

I and other members of my 60mm mortar squad slung 45 lbs of gun or ammo from same shoulder over numerous days and numerous miles in Europe.

I knew nothing about my scoliosis until a recent xray for arthritis, so have no historical data for my 79 years.

    Hi RangerTed...

You should probably ask a scoliosis specialist for a definitive answer, but I think that uneven distribution of carried weight can cause lower back pain, but not scoliosis. Before the era of outcome studies, many of us with scoliosis were told that our scoliosis was caused by carrying heavy things (especially babies) on one hip before our skeletons were mature. Now, I've heard dozens of scoliosis specialists say that was nonsense.

Carrying heavy objects on one side can cause a functional scoliosis, which is a temporary curve.

You're not alone in finding scoliosis for the first time at a mature age. In a very recent study, it was found that 68% of healthy adults with an average age of 70.5, have scoliosis:
