  • Daughter just diagnosed

I have a daughter that has been diagnosed with a 30 degree curvature. We have met with an Orthopedic and he suggests a brace but the two local companys don't seem to have a lot of experience with scoliosis. It also seems that the surgeon may not have a great deal of experience with it as well. We have contacted the Shriners in Spokane but the wait there is three months and I don't really want to wait that long.
We looked into the clinic in Baton Rouge but after reading some comments here, I don't have much confidence in that direction.
Any comments or suggestions would be helpful.

Hi and welcome to the board.

How old is your daughter? Where are you located? Spokane and Baton Rouge aren't very close neighbors There are other places who specialize in pediatric scoliosis. I suggest you find a pediatric orthopedist who specializes in scoliosis treatment. There are several Shriner's facilities (besides Spokane) who have very reputable scoliosis specialists. Are you willing to travel for care?

I have two children with scoliosis. My teenage daughter (17) has a 40degree lumbar curve with a rotation of her spine. She wore a brace for about a year without much visible benefit. She is at the borderline for surgical recommendations... we are waiting for a while to see how her body stabilizes (hopefully it will) and whether or not she needs more intervention.

My 8yr old son was born with severe congenital scoliosis. He has had several surgeries to stabilize his spine and will face more rod expansion surgeries as he continues to grow. I hope you find a good doc who is willing to help your daughter through her scoliosis experience. You need someone who will be there for you throughout the journey. Let us know how things are going for you. I'm sure someone here can offer a recommendation for an ortho if you give us some details about where you are located.

    My best!

Thanks for the imput, my daughter is 12 and we live in Whitefish, Montana. I am willing to travel. Baton Rouge was mentioned only because a family here in Whitefish sent their son and daughter who both have severe curvatures to a clinic there after going to Shriners and evaluating other places that specialize in this condition.
I really am open to imput and want to investigate the best options.
My daughters scoliosis is idopathic and she doesn't suffer much discomfort at this point. I just want to be pro-active in her treatment. Thanks for the help.

        Hi again,

I suggest you contact Dr. John Smith at Primary Children's Medical Center in SLC. He is our family's ortho, and he is very good. We love him! Or, if you want to go to Seattle, Dr. Song is great at Seattle Children's. Shriners here in SLC is also VERY good. Any of those places would give you good information and recommendations, I'm sure. If you'd like phone numbers, let me know, I'd be happy to share.

Good luck and you are doing great being pro-active in your daughter's treatments. Keep up the great work!
