  • do you know these doctors?

Does anyone know of Dr. Paul Glazer in Boston? Or Dr. Gilbert Meadows in San Antonio? Or Dr. Frank Kuwamura in San Antonio? I have been told that because of my "severe" scoliosis & degenerative disc disease that I need surgery by a specialist. I would like to have references, if possible. Thanks! Crooked Spine

    Hi Crooked...

I have heard good things about Dr. Glazer. (I've never heard of Dr. Kuwamura, although that doesn't really mean anything.) You do not need to travel all the way to Boston for surgery. Both Dr. Mike LaGrone in Amarillo and Dr. Barton Sachs in Plano come very highly recommended.

    Regards,
    Linda

      Linda,

I realize that there are very good doctors here in the San Antonio area, even; however, I have been informed that because of the type of curvature I have (I have an extra half bone in my spine), the stenosis, and the degenerative disc disease, I need a specialized specialist. I will look up these doctors you have given me to check them out. Thanks so much! I do want to be closer to home, if possible, but I want the best I can get, also!!

        Crooked Spine,

That was one of the surprises that my doctor had during my surgery, an extra vertabrae on one side (didn't show in any of the x-rays or MRI's). Also part of my spine had started fusing to itself. I don't know which part of the spine. I also have degenerative disc disease. My lumbar disc were so deformed and deteriated that I was fused to the sacrum. I am now going back to have an osteotomy to correct my saggital balance. Good Luck on your search.

        April 8 & 12, 2004 - Anterior/Posterior surgery 15 hours & 7 hours
        Thorasic - 79 degree down to 22
        Lumbar - 44 degree down to 18
        Fused T2 to sacrum
        June 2, 2005 - Pedicle subtraction osteotomy @L3 7 hours
MAY 21, 2007 - Pedicle subtraction osteotomy @ L2, extended the fusion to S2 and added pelvic instrumentation 9 hours

        FUSED T2 - SACRUM 2

          Crooked...

While congenital scoliosis isn't as common as idiopathic scoliosis, I can assure you that any good scoliosis specialist will have treated many cases such as your own.

            Crooked ...

Dr. Glazer is also my doctor. I've been seeing him for the past 5 yrs, mainly just for follow up and consulation. I've seem other doctors, and he's the one i like the best.

Although i haven't had surgery, but i think he's wonderful. And i did talk to two of his patients and he came highly recommended.

              Surgery

              Crooked spine:
If you are in the San Antonio area and you need to see Dr. Shelokov. He
has extensive background with children and adults . He was recommended
by several surgeons in Plano. He is conservative in method, yet his plan for my back was very innovative. Some people love his manner, some people are put off by it. His plan for your back will probably be different from all other doctors you have seen. I also interviewed Dr. Sachs, although I liked him as a person, his plan of how to deal with a 63 year old s- curve back just wasn't as innovative as Dr. Shekov's idea. In the end you want the best surgeon, not the most popular personality working on your back. You will also be in a new hospital with the most up- to- date equipment. I was also given names and numbers of six other women my age with whom I have both dined and conversed. It is still too early for me to talk about my outcome, however, at almost four months I am doing as well as I can expect. I do not doubt that I had a top surgeon in Noth Texas. Kathleen

                  Surgery in 2000

I had anterior and posterior spinal fusions done in 2000 by Dr. Michael Neuwirth in New York. The reason why I chose him was because he was the surgeon for Gloria Estefan and I figured that there was a good reason why she chose him. I was in the hospital for 7 days after 11 1/2 hour surgery and walked out of the hospital without crutches, back brace or a walker. I was in therapy after 6 weeks and returned to work in 3 months. The man is a genius and had such wonderful bedside manners. I would recommend him to everyone considering spinal surgery. He worked a miracle with her and he treated me the same way (only my picture is not in his office, LOL) If you have any questions, I will gladly answer them the best I can.
