neuropathy and scoliosis???

Hi everyone:

I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with neuropathies in the feet and whether they can be a side effect of scoliosis or not? I have tried some searches but so far haven't turned up any information so I thought I would ask here and see if anyone has any knowledge about this.

Neuropathys are when you get pins and needles or loss of feeling in your extremities usually from something going on with the nerves.

Hi Nancy...

I think they're pretty common in people with scoliosis, although not as common as leg and arm pain. I almost never have foot pain, but I get a feeling like my left heel is heating up and then cooling off and heating up again, occasionally.

I get that exact feeling on my left side... I actually have no feeling there at all. Sometimes it heats up then cools down, and at other times, I get pins and needles in the area as well. Usually, its just sort of numb... I try to pinch it really hard, but it just sort of tingles dully... does anyone know if this goes away after surgery, or is this something else we'll have to deal with for the rest of our lives? thanks everyone.

Hi Monie...

The leg pain I had before my surgery went away. I think it usually does go away, but I believe the damage to the nerve can become permanent if it goes on too long.

hi, nancy...my lumbar curve resulted in pinched nerves...i lost feeling in most of my toes on the left foot and i was numb down the sides of my left leg. the feeling is returning on my leg, but my toes are still numb (except for the one that hurts!). i'm hopeful everything will return to "normal" someday.

Can you remind me, what was the degree of your curve? Also, was your lumbar curve (where the nerve was pinched) a left curve or a right curve?

hi, laura, i'm doing great these days! my lumbar curve was 56 degrees and it was a right curve if that means the concave side was on the right. my right hip was much higher than my left before surgery...the pinched nerves were at l4 and l5 on the left side.

Thanks ev1 for the info - I was just trying to figure out if my entire problem is from type 2 diabetes or scoliosis or maybe some of both. It just seemed to happen too soon after finding out about the diabetes so I wondered if maybe some of it was from the curves. I am seeing a pysiatrist tomorrow (orthopedic rehab specialist) since none of the surgeons are interested in helping me at all. This Dr has been the only one so far to have any suggestions at all. I am so tired of the pain and having no one to help. At least you folks don't mind listening to me whine lol.

I have a neromuscular disorder called CMT (Charcot Marie Tooth) that causes foot problems and pains but it might be something completely different than what you are asking. There has been some correlations found with CMT and Scoliosis patients but it is NOT an always type of thing, usually only with certain types. Sorry if this doesn't help at all.
