  • Chicago, Dr. DeWald specializes in scoliosis

Dr. DeWald came highly recommended from my brother0in0law, who is an anesthesiologist, and he has seen tons of these surgeries. Dr. DeWald only performs scoliosis surgeries, and he is an amazing, amazing man, surgeon and counselor.

He followed my case for a couple of years while I tried everything in the world, from physical therapy, accupuncture, pain meds, three lumbar epidurals, personal training sessions, etc., etc. He never once pushed me to make a decision. When I was finally ready, and had done all I could, he made me feel so comfortable, and I knew I had made the right decision.

My surgery went without a hitch, albeit only 5 weeks have passed since then. But I already feel great! and am just totally flabbergasted that all went so well.

I highly recommend this surgeon, and please email me if you have questions.

Nice pics in blog! I am setup to see Dr. Hammergerg @ rush. I chose him over his partner Chris Dewald because him and Ronald Dewald (chris's father) started together I believe. Did I make a mistake? Ask you Brother in law please! I saw Ronald Dewald in 1979 and was told at that time I was not a candidate for surgery. Unfortuneately things have progressed, which is not common in men. I am now 52 years young and have a 50 deg T and 40 deg L curve. By the way I am happily married but I thought you did look sexy and I am very interested in women's underwear, unlike your husband. (you better ask him, I'll bet he is interested, just not for himself mind you)

      Dr. Hammerberg

I just wanted to let you know that Dr. Hammerberg is supposed to be one of the best. I was referred to him by another orthopedic surgeon when I lived in the Chicago area.

          Dr. Hammerberg

I was referred to Dr. C. Dewald or Dr. Hammerberg; I know they specialize in scoliosis. Do you know if they do other types of back surgeries?

          Thanks!!

            Hi RobergeBJ...

According to their website Dr. Hammerberg: "has published numerous articles and book chapters on surgery for the treatment of scoliosis and other spinal problems. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Hammerberg is involved in ongoing reseach in various aspects of spinal afflictions including the treatment of degenerative disc disease." Dr. DeWald's bio doesn't give any particulars. I think that most scoliosis surgeons also do surgeries like discectomies and smaller fusions, as well as other types of deformity surgery like spondylolithesis correction. Some also do spinal trauma and/or tumor surgery in addition.

            Regards,
            Linda

              Dr. Hammerberg

I just stumbled onto this forum as I was searching for information on pregnancy, and more specifically, labor and delivery after scoliosis surgery. I was diagnosed with scoliosis in 8th grade (during my high school physical) by my doctor. We had x-rays done and were referred to a specialist, who said that my scoliosis was too far along for a brace, and recommended surgery. I was very lucky to have been referred to Dr. Hammerberg and we had a wonderful experience. He is a wonderful doctor with a great bedside manner.

My mom and I were very grateful to have been referred to such a wonderful doctor. I never met with Dr. DeWald, but our brief observation was that he seemed a little more "rushed" and didn't have the same openness as we felt Dr. Hammerberg did. But that was 14 years ago and it was based on brief observations. One thing that I know for sure, they are top notch doctors.

Everything that I experienced with the surgery was positive. It took less time than normal to do the surgery, I had less bleeding than usual, I was only in the hospital for a week, out of school for a month, and had no problems (other than my scar from my hip "spreading" - which I think was due to my overdoing things during recovery).

I am finding it interesting that so many are complaining of lots of pain years after surgery. I have been fortunate so far and experienced no pain.

Dr DeWald the best! Wondering about extended fusion

I'm originally from Chicago. I live in Charleston now but Dr DeWald has always been my doc. They say he is world renown for Scolosis. He is soo caring and compasionate. I had rods put in 1973 and he had to remove them in 95 with a solid fusion due to a moving rod.

I was just wondering if anyone has had extended fusion. Now my discs above and below the fusion are bulding. I was curious as to what the results are from an extened fusion. Any input from anyone?

                Thanks!
