  • wicked pain up and down the rods

Hello.......I posted about the terrible pain I have with my spinal fusion, which is fairly large T6-L4
Someone asked if I might have a sensitivity to the rods.......but I cannot get ANY doctor to believe this.

Could I be allergic? sensitive to the rods? I WISH I could get someone to help me.......I'm 62 years old and I can't stand the pain. I take 2700mg of Gabapentin.....but that doesn't come close to calming this pain.

I live in Connecticut and I just don't know where to turn. I've seen more than a half dozen surgeons who do the type of surgery I had......but they all say "well, everything looks ok".

I just don't know what to do.

    Any thoughts? I'm desperate

ps - I first had stainless steel rods.....doc reluctantly said it could be an allergy (I knew I was allergic to Nickel, but was never told they were using stainless, which contains nickel)......so he removed them and put in titanium. Pain is almost worse because I actually have 3 rods now instead of 2.

I am not a surgeon, or doctor, and I hate to assume anything since that is usually fruitless. But this sounds awfully familiar to what happened to Jackie. She ended up with Arachoniditis.

Did you follow her threads? About a year ago....

I forget exactly how and who diagnosed her. I think she saw a neurologist. ??? Her spine surgeon said she was fine.

Hi Carol i just happened to be on the forum and noticed your thread. I also saw Ed 's message. Yes I was diagnosed with arachnoiditis. It is a problem in the spinal cord and one of the causes is blood in the spinal cord. Most likely mine was caused by 5 years in the Dura later of the spinal cord during the scoliosis surgery. I was diagnosed by a neurosurgeon. They used a mylogram since an MRI would not give a clear reading.
It can cause pain an neurological defects. I am bothered by the defects.
One treatment is a spinal cord stimulator. The other is a interthecal pump. That is what I have. It does seam to help. It is a trial to get the right meds and dose. Not all doctors believe in this diagnosis of treatment.
      It is worth a discussion.
