  • Happy Birthday to my back!

It has been exactly one year since I was fused T3-sacrum. What a year! The first 6 months were really tough. I have come so far. Had to re-learn how to stand, walk, sit, shower, etc and now I am (mostly) able to keep up with my 2 kids (9 and 4). I still have pain, my shoulder blades continue to be a problem, but my back pain is less and my stamina is exponentially better. Can I say it was worth it? Yes and no. I still feel like I am in recovery mode. I really try to keep reminding myself that I couldn't even stand for 10 minutes before the surgery. I can even lift my 4 year old onto my lap and rock him to sleep now. I didn't know if I'd ever be able to do that again. For anyone thinking about doing this, it's scary and a long road. But the other side is much better!!
T4-Sacrum fusion, with pelvic fixation in January 2015, Dr. Lonner in NYC

At time of surgery, curves were 45 and 65 degrees
Chronic back pain, worsening, since age 11
Tried every pain management procedure, acupuncture, chiropractor, physical therapy ever created

            Awesome! So happy for you!
I've heard healing continues through the 2nd year. I'm 15 months out & looking forward to even more improvement this year - sometimes I wonder how that could be when my back is SO much better than I anticipated.

Congratulations! i know it feels good to have that first anniversary and to be doing well. Several aches that I had at a year ( tailbone, shoulder blades, ribs) decreased during year two to the point of being nonexistent.
