  • Stretch marks on Back...

    Hello,

My son is 13 and his curve was discovered at a routine doctor's visit this fall. He started seeing the scoliosis specialist.
He had an x-ray and good news....we are watching and waiting.
The curve is mild but merits watching.
He has to visit every 12 weeks for measurements and/or xrays.
We went back for the 2nd visit today.
I was surprised when the doctor pointed out stretch marks on my son's back. I did NOT see these 12 weeks ago.
The doctor said that this sometimes happens with scoliosis.
I was stunned to see those familiar silvery stretch marks that I remembered from huge pregnant belly on my son's back.
They are horizontal....on either side of his spine and one running right across it.

My question is.......does everyone with scoliosis get these?
    Will there be more?

I suppose in the grand scheme of things this is small issue....and I'm thankful....but also curious.

    Thank you for any information

    Ty's Mom.

Very interesting. I've seen hundreds of backs of people with scoliosis, and never noticed stretch marks. It seems surprising to me that the stretch marks are even on both sides of the spine. I know that there's a chemical component to stretch marks, and I wonder if/how that is related.

In my research about my scoliosis I found information about a connective tissue disorder called Marfan Syndrome. Two of its characteristics are scoliosis and stretch marks. Possibly your doctor could refer you to someone who is knowledgeable in this area. There is a website for the Marfan Foundation. I don't know it at the moment but you could put Marfan Syndrome it in your search engine and get it.

            I hope this helps.

Here's some information on stretch marks in Marfan:

              - Many people with The Marfan syndrome develop stretch marks on their skin, even without any significant weight change or pregnancy. These stretch marks can occur at any age and pose no health risk. The stretch marks tend to appear at sites subject to stress such as shoulders, hips and lower back. The stretch marks require no treatment.

its really trippy how u'z bought up marfans. the first time i went to the scoliosis specialist, the guy who was just asking me questions thought i had it because im very skinny and long-limbed which makes me look ALOT taller than what i am (5'3).my specialist was fairly certain i didnt have it but i was still worried. he also got me to see if i could wrap my pinky & thumb fingers around my wrist (i think it was them fingers) because the majority of people with marfans can do that. i can do it as i have very thin wrists & long fingers. they also usually have eye problems and heart problems and their roof of ther mouths are high, as well as having an indented brestbone (in the centre). i have eye problems and my mouth was slightly high but nothing to unusual, and i have an indent in my brestbone, but my mum does as well. i had tests at a heart specialist and eye specialist. turns out the tests were negative and i dont have it, which is good.

has this happened to anyone else?

I don't think I had stretch marks on my back, but I definitly got them on my upper thighs after the surgery. The surgery did cause me to grow 3 inches, so for such rapid growth in a short period of time, the surgeon said it was normal. Five years later, they are still here....but have faded significantly and don't seem to be a problem.

I am most curious about the stretch marks horizonally accross the lower back, as my own son developed them when he was about 14. At first it was three marks to the left of the spine, kind of looking like a tiger had swiped him with its claw. As he got older, more marks occurred and it continued accross his back to the right side of the spine. He is 17 now, and it kind of looks like he was used multiple times as a cat clawing post!

All of the stretch marks have no pain, but generally will periodically fade out, and then later appear very red. My son weighs about 120 pounds, sometimes up to 127, but was never in a position of fast growth to create this (he is about 5'6" tall). Coincidentally he was also diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at the same time when he was about 14 years old, and put on prednisone.

I always thought it may have had something to do with the UC, or even the steroid. . . The doc was never interested in it.

I had them too and my mother was convinced I was being bullied at school... And then when I got changed at school, the other kids must have thought my parents beat me or something...

Then we found out I had....Scheuermann's Disease ..

Hey everyone. I just stumbled upon this forum today while google searching a problem I have.

I have had these stretch marks going across my back since I was a teen and they are white looking now and my skin is light brown so they are very noticable. They go from my mid-back all the way down past my buttocks.

I have always been skinny and I never once rapidly gained weight. Its been gradual. So I have always wondered about my stretch marks. Doctors said they are harmless and a lot of them gave me a weird look like I had a weight control problem, but I never have.

I'm 22 years old now, and the only explanation is Marfans Syndrome .... but I have never had any problems with my heart or lungs or nervous system or eyes. Doctor check ups have always gone good.

Is there a treatmeant for stretchmarks? Mine faded into white and for me thats not good because my skin tone is light/medium brown.

its funny that everyone is talking about stretch marks. My daughter did get some after her surgery and she is not happy about it. I wondered why, but thought maybe from growing after her surgery

                            Re:incubusor

                            I've just turned 30. Tall 6'2", Arachnodactyl.
I seem to have a few of the Skeletal symptoms(arachnodactyl, pectus
excavatum - but its mild and never bothered me, thumb and wrist signs etc)
                            .
Hernia as a kid 4 years old(apparently due to cycling), Mild mitral valve prolapse, skin striae.
My sister is also tall, thin and myopic. But no one in the family has died from this as yet.

I haven't been put on beta blockers or anything else..my aotic root is normal
at 2.4 cm. However after reading this http://www.westga.edu/~wmaples/paulsen.html i am not so sure anymore!

I am still confused as to what to do! The cardiologist i consulted feels that
                            1. I dont have it.
                            2. If i have it it's mild so wait and watch.
                            I live in India Bangalore.
