  • Will physical therapy prevent post surgery twist?

I had two visits to doc's today. A Podiatrist and a Physical Therapist, who agreed if I don't work on my posture I will need to be posting on the revision board about my second surgery. I had fusion from T6 to S 2 with pelvic fixation on June 21, 2014. My worst curve was at L2. Secondary was at t9. My spine was twisted in between with a grade 2 spondylothesis at L2. So now every thin fused is 100 percent straight with a level pelvis, but now my shoulder girdle tilts and my unfused upper spine leans to the right while my straight spine tilts left, along with my pelvis. Why is this happening? Is it normal? Can I fix it with new orthotics and Physical Therapy? Will. It progress to surgery? I have already had SI joint injections which stopped bad pain and I am having finger tingling in my left hand. Thanks, everyone!

No one here (along with the physical therapist and podiatrist) is qualified to answer your question. I'd like to encourage you to go back to your surgeon, or if you don't feel you can trust him/her to give you an honest answer, go to another specialist.

      I agree with Linda.

I'm just a little curious why you think these people would be able to advise you on a serious spinal orthopedic issue? They are lay people in that regard.

        in Agreement

The instrumentation placed in your back is not made out of soft material that would bend easily due to back posture, I am guessing and adding my worthless penny.

However, if your body twist wrongly even once or if you get cocky and decide you can twist and turn to get in and out of bed instead of log rolling then your body's muscles will let you know immediately that it was a back move - no doubt that you will feel the pain or the imaginary 'tear'.

And you will correct your body position immediately as it is not comfortable. When I do this, the pain the pulling/ripping pain decreases almost to zero within minutes.

I pay attention to my body, signs, quirks, (skin color, dryness, ridges etc along the incesion). Body tells you many things as long as you pay attention. This back and spine is a vital component of our bodies - untrained people did not know your back as your surgeon nor they feel the signals it gives you. They offer their educated or not guess but I would listen and confirm if it has merits. Otherwise, chuck it and say thank you for the concern.

Thanks everyone. I know you are not surgeons. I did not mean to make you angry. I saw my surgeon last week...and in reviewing my latest X-ray he noted that the area above my spine seemed to twist or turn. Further in our conversation (which lasted all of fifteen minutes, I drove five hours for fifteen minutes) he told asked me about physical therapy. I told him I had been cleared after six weeks because I was walking. He sent another referral to someone who could raise the bar for me. I know you all understand about the pain we endure. I am terrified that something I do or don't do will cause me to have to undergo another surgery.

            Hi...

First, I don't think anyone was angry. :-) Second, there's really very little you can do to cause the need for another surgery. You may, indeed, need more surgery. (A fairly large percentage of adult scoliosis surgery patients require additional procedures.) If that happens, you'll figure out a way to deal with it. My feeling is that it all sucks, but it's the hand we got dealt.

By the way, by "these people", I meant the physical therapist and the podiatrist.

I think the patients on here know far more about this than those allied medical health people although of course the only valid answer will come from a surgeon.

              Good luck.

                Thanks, Linda and Sharon,

I am sorry I over reacted...I am weaning myself off Percocet and am having hypersensitivity issues. I guess I should be grateful I am not facing cancer. A friend of mine who had lumbar fusion several years ago is dealing with cancer now.

I really hope and pray I am done with back surgery, but I know my scoli went from non diagnosable to emergency surgery in six years. My sister had the two day surgery for her back, and had a stroke the day of her second surgery caused by the trauma. She lived but lost most of her speech and her right side is still affected.

It is comforting to have a place to share.

The part of my spine I am worried about is the unfused part of my t spine and my c spine. I guess my best bet is to work on my issues of today and leave the rest to God. The fear of surgery is...I was going to say as bad as the surgery, but not this surgery.
