Hello and Welcome Back!!!
I am hoping to hear from anybody who has seen Dr. Hey, but especially those who have had surgery with him or any other treatment for their back problem. I tried to do a search on this, but came up with a lot of "Hey"s, as in "Hello." Missed you all and hope all are well, AngieM

Have you seen his blog? I am guessing he is the only surgeon who blogs.

He also has a youtube channel...

My favorite videos are the conversations with the camera in his car as he is driving to work. Those are pretty good. I wish he would do more of those.

I had surgery with Dr Hey on October 2, 2012. My whole spine was fused from T1 to sacrum with pelvic fixation. I highly recommend Dr Hey!

Dr Hey does surgery Monday through Thursday and Friday is appointment day. The wait isn't too long but when I was there last week, they had an unusually high number of people that needed seen so I waited a long time. I'm glad that wasn't always the case. And even though there were so many patients to be seen, Dr Hey still gave me 100% of his attention and he carefully considered all my questions and answered them. He never made me feel rushed. I've seen plenty of Drs and specialists over the years but most seem more keen on their career or own knowledge than on the patients. Dr Hey truly cares about his patients as people. And he freely shares as much technical information as you want to hear.

My one year appointment was last week. I mentioned a couple concerns to Dr Hey and he took the time to study and measure parts of my x-ray. I could tell at one point that he was really giving it thought before answering. I so appreciate that!

I think Dr Hey does about 5 scoliosis surgeries a week. He described his team as the "rolls royce" of scoli teams. Having met them, I agree. They have a fantastic germ-free operating room with state-of-the-art vacuum air cleaning system and they wear full "space suits" to further the germ-free environment. It wasn't until during my recovery that I understood how incredibly important that sanitary environment was. Dr Hey's team works like a well-oiled machine and their experience means they've just about seen it all so there aren't many conditions that surprise them in the middle of a surgery.

Patients travel from all over the country to see him. It's incredibly fortunate that I found him by doing a web search for scoliosis surgeons and found him. His office is only 20 minutes from where I live. Wow. So if any of you visit Dr Hey, please let me know and I'd be happy to meet you!

Oh, and if you're concerned about your scar, there are no staples and the stitching is not visible. The scar is a beautiful neat, tidy line.

Thank you, Linda! I looked over those posts and found them encouraging. Dr. Hey's background is very impressive. I still need to hear from more adults, and older ones if that is possible. I am doing this research for my cousin, who lives in a small town in North Carolina (2 1/2 hours from Raleigh) and needs to see a specialist about her back problem. She doesn't see going long distances as a possibility.
Thank you from both of us, AngieM

Thank You, Sharon,
I have been following Dr. Hey's Blog, but not his youtube channel. I got a lot of information about his different patients and surgeries. I especially like the one about the 89 year old woman, who had surgery when she was 74! That was my age when I surgery with Dr. Lenke a year ago. My interest in Dr. Hey is for my cousin, who lives in NC. She has an appointment to see him next week. We are hoping to get some direction from him. Will keep you posted.
All the Best, AngieM

JuliaAnn, it was great to get your reply with a description of your surgery with Dr. Hey. He has created a good deal of buzz on this forum, but we have not heard a lot from adults who have had surgery with him. I am actually interested in Dr. Hey because my cousin has an appointment with him next week. I will, hopefully, be able to report back on what he suggests to her. She is not able to travel long distances at this time, so my husband and I will be going with her.

My own surgery sounds a lot like yours. It was with Dr. Lenke in St. Louis on September 24, 2012 (just a week before yours). I am also fused T/2 to sacrum with pelvic fixation. I had a thoraco/lumbar curve of 66 degrees and am beyond thrilled with my now straight back!

We are very relieved to hear how pleased you are with Dr. Hey. Thank you so much, AngieM
