  • Can hardware cause allergic dermatitis?

Hello all -- I wanted to see if anyone has had this problem. I had fusion with cobalt chrome rods and titanium screws in December 2011. About January of this year, so a little over a year post-op -- I developed a skin rash, eczema around my eyes, upper and lower. Looked like a bloodshot raccoon. Went to an allergist and patch test showed positive for two things: fragrance and (here's the reason for this post) cobalt. Now I don't have a skin rash around my spine area, but on my face. With a cream (Elidel) the rash is under control, but just was wondering if anyone else had this experience. I did ask my surgeon in a post-op visit last month, and he doesn't think it's related. So just wanted to see if anyone else had the same experience. Thanks for any responses.
