Hi Karen,

I just discovered that my daughter is having scoliosis and the cob angle is 35degree at the thoracic and 24degree at the lumba. I was introduced to SpineCore by the Doctor. She has worn it for a week and she seems comfortable now. The last checked by the supplier, on the brace, her lumba was 0 degree (not xray). I'm not sure whether this brace will help to stabilise or reverse the curve. But this is the best alternative that we can find so far compared to Boston. She is 12 years old and have not got her mense. her curve started at thoracic 5 to 7, but not sure at the lumba side. I hope this info help. Regards

Hello!
I was surprised to read your posts about the Spinecore Brace. I thought it was pulled from the market, ONLY because something to do with the funding. I had heard it was an effective tool for slowing/stopping the curve. What state do you live in? Pat

Pat,

Who told you that the SpineCor brace was pulled from the market ? As far as I know, they're very doing well - I hope they're not going bankrupt ? If you pull up their website and look at case studies and scientific studies you will see that the results speak for themselves. The thing that worries me - in my own particular situation - is that the brace is relatively new and doesn't have an established following as do the Boston and Milwaukee braces. However, many people who have worn Milwaukee and Boston have gone on to require spine surgery. The SpineCor concept is very appealing - it looks like a very comfortable brace and some people have had miraculous results with it. My daughter is only four and a half, I don't know if she would be a candidate for such a brace. It's something I'll definitely look into as she gets older. Adolescent children with curves below 30 degrees have had very good results - so it's something to consider. Here's the website:

As i understand the american firm who used to make it has sold it to a small british firm (see their website), the owner of which is very enthousiastically promoting it now on both sides of the ocean.

Published results seem extremely good, but it is very hard to work out why the idea is not really catching on yet, and i would love to hear from other people with either good or bad experiences (because of my daughter of 11 who has a 29 degree T 12 scoliosis, currently in hard brace, which is correcting it to 21 degree, not sure whetther that is "good enough")

First off all I would like to apologies for my bad English.

I am mother of girl born 11.04.1996., diagnosed lumbar scoliosis 21 d. according to COBB.

Rigid TLSO brace recommended, I was wondering if SpineCor brace would be better for her.

I would like to get in contact with treated patient, their experience, opinion.

Thank You in advance for any answer!

As far as enthusiatically promoting it on both sides of the ocean, I don't believe that this is the case. Our hospital was conducting a study on the effectiveness of the SpineCor brace a few years ago when the British Co. abruptly pulled all funding for the study. This seems to have been the case at many centres across North America. All children who were being treated with the SpineCor brace were suddenly left without a supplier.

Hi Celia ;although I really am not in the business of "defending" the current company, I do wonder whether the funding would have stopped when the previous company pulled out. I am also aware that the current manufacturer is only a very small business, so i would be surprised if he would be able to fund research all over the globe.

If research was conducted in "your hospital" have you any insight in what kind of results were being achieved?

best wishes

Gerbo,

I hope I'm not creating an international incident or bad press against the current company. This forum is a discussion place for parents and people who suffer from scoliosis. The information I gave you is based on hearsay evidence - i.e., what the orthotist told me. If Biothorex is a small company then it makes sense that funding would have stopped. Unfortunately, I have no insights into preliminary studies at our hospital. I do know that anyone who progressed more than 6 degrees were prescribed a rigid brace. :)

Not through me, that's for sure, and free exchange of information can only help us all.

did read your story about your daughter and how much she improved, very impressed, are you still in contact with dr Mehta, and how is your daughter doing?

Which was the hospital doing the trial?

best wishes

Gerbo,

I'm all for the free exchange of information. I was thinking that maybe you can contact any of the following centres in the U.K. and see what kind of results they have obtained so far with the SpineCor brace, if you find out anything please let us all know. I've also provided a list of U.S. centres that are currently prescribing the SpineCor if anyone in the U.S. is interested in contacting them to obtain results. If you find anything, please post the results :D

Dear Celia

Well, you are not half thorough, I like that. I'll think of a little questionaire to send to all consultants, asking for their objective/ subjective views/ experiences and see what we'll get back. I'll post this (the questionaire) once i am back from holiday next week

Best wishes

Gerbo,

Thanks for the nice words :) I'll see what I can come up with on my end - I won't be able to contact every centre though. Are you sending the questionnaire via e-mail ? I was thinking of just calling them on the phone.

Gerbo/Lurkers, :D

I spoke to a few orthotists and I e-mailed a few others but I found that I got better responses by just talking to them directly. So... I found out that some centres are getting comparable results to published studies but others are failing miserably, this could be due to a learning curve problem. Very close follow-up is important, the straps have to be replaced/adjusted every three months. I got the impression that this was a major key to success. The type of curve treated is important, apparently long single curves do better than short or double curves. The brace is intended for small curves 30 degrees and under, although curves between 30 and 40 degrees have been treated with the brace. Studies that have been done to date have been on adolescent curves rather than juvenile curves - although it looks like studies in the juvenile group will be done at some point in the not too distant future. That's it in a nutshell.

My son is in the spinecor brace, and it has taken away his chronic terrible scoliosis pain and lessened his curve, and he's over 20 years old. It's a god send, as far as we're concerned.
