  • What is Central Line?

Several people mentioned that they had a central line put in before the surgery. What is central line? Is everybody getting it or it's dependant on a surgeon, specific case etc? Thanks!
I am stronger than scoliosis, and won't let it rule my life!

I am sure that most everyone has a central line these days. It assures that the MD can access your blood system and also measure your central pressure. Contral lines do not need changing as often as lines that are more distal...like in your arm. The line is also big enough to get blood in and many IVs in your arm are not.

Everyone having major surgery gets a central line.

They put mine in after I was out. After I woke up, I had about a dozen tubes and drains. Its not as bad as getting hit with silly string at Halloween, but you get the idea. (smiley face)

They don’t hurt at all, what happens is you get tangled up when you roll over....and for some reason the drains always end up under your back. Its like laying on a pot. I couldn’t get comfortable and cursed the bed to no end.

I was NPO with an NG tube. No food by mouth and the NG tube makes your throat extremely sore. This was probably used due to my anterior, in which ileus is just about inevitable.
