  • excited might be able to get additional coverage..

I'm trying to not get to excited before i contact the program. But it's still 7am here and i don't think anyone would be in. That and it's saturday so they might not be in until Monday anyway.

but Ashleigh is currently enrolled in BCMH (bureau for children with medical handicaps), because of her diabetes. BCMH picks up 100% of what our insurance does not cover. So we never have to pay for anything related to her diabetes. They cover doctor's appointments, lab tests, insulin, her insulin pump, all her supplies. If it has anything to do with diabetes, they'll cover it fully. Which is good because her test strips alone are around $400 a month.

So i got to thinking i wonder if scoliosis would be a condition they cover (they cover chronic medical conditions). Went to the website and scoliosis is listed as a condition.

Now i need to call and see if she can be covered under 2 different diagnosis. Hopefully she can, and that will help with the doctor's appointments and hopefully surgery. (we're already recieving bills from the ortho). Right now it's only $20 but i know it'll be more soon.

    Hi,

that sounds like a great program...I hope you can get more info about the scoliosis coverage soon.

I don't know where you live, but Shriner's Hospitals for Children provide free, state of the art orthopedic care to children regardless of financial or insurance status. The care is very top-rate and second to none, and many people who could afford to see any private doctor have chosen to have their child treated at Shriner's due to the high quality of care. My daughter had stapling surgery two years ago at Shriner's St Louis and she is doing great now.

You can search for a hospital in your area at http://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/ . The application is a very simple form and you do not need to be sponsored by or know a Shriner.

Best of luck with your daughter,

Do other states have similar programs?

      Dear madileigh,

I hope the program you are talking about helps with scoliosis as well.

I realize this info won't help you, but want to throw the info out for folks who live in CA.

CCS (California Children's Services) provides medical coverage for children with a curve 20° or larger in CA. It sounds like a similar service to BCMH. We used it to cover my daughter's seizure meds and they also picked up the $ difference left over from her medical visits. Like your child's test strips, her meds were very expensive even after our PPO and Medical paid their portion of the tab--OVER a thousand of dollars per month. I had just left my position so I could drive our daughter to the various specialists and could not have paid for her meds without it. Before I learned about CCS, I was in a panic after the first visit to the pharmacy!

I wonder if all states have a similar service for children.

      A Mom

We're in Ohio. Thanks for the link to the shriners hospitals. I've actually checked it out already and found the closest one to us, which is in Erie PA. It's about a 2 hour drive. If i can i'd like if at all possible to have her surgery done at the children's hospital. The orthopedic surgeon we are seeing specializes in scoliosis and has done around 100 fusion surgeries per year. That and Ashleigh's endocrinology team is located in the same hospital, so if there are problems in regards to her diabetes they're right there. oh yeah and we have 3 other children at home to take care of too!

If we find out that after the insurance and (hopefully) BCMH we still can't swing the cost. I told my husband we should look into the shriners hospitals.
