  • Scoliosis/Kyphosis

I know that many people who have scoliosis also have kyphosis. Does scoliosis surgery automatically correct the kyphosis or is a separate surgery needed for kyphosis?

Surgeons have to look at the whole picture, it’s a multi dimensional package. They address scoliosis along with kyphosis and lordosis usually in the same surgery. They also correct rotation of each vertebrae which is done with todays pedicle screws. This is something that has made the “Harrington rod” pretty much obsolete.....since it didn’t used screws.

The final result should not include any “leaning” to the side, forward or backward. Curves should be reduced....in adults around age 50, usually a 50% correction is the norm....

Multiple surgeries are not dictated by “planes” They do not repair scoliosis, then in another surgery repair kyphosis.

I had to have 2 surgeries since I had pretty bad degeneration and had to have cages or spacers installed from the front in my lumbar area. A 2 stage, anterior first, then posterior with the screws and rods installed 2 days later. This is one example of why a multi procedure might be selected.

Thank you for the information and the pictures, Ed. I'm sorry you had to endure two surgeries but from the pictures they certainly seem worth it.

        Welcome

If you have a surgeon that knows what he is doing, then one operation should be all that is needed

Kyphosis and scoliosis curves can generally be addressed using one technique. Depending on the degree and location of kyphosis, I think it sometimes requires techniques like pedicle subtraction osteotomies or vertebral column resections. Those techniques, however, are usually done within the same surgery session.

Invasive anterior surgery isn’t the most pleasant thing....but it was worth it because I came out great. I do everything I want to do.... and get out of the things I don’t want to do. Its nice to have the option..... The people I work with will not let me lift anything, and that’s just fine with me. (smiley face)

I will tell them I have permission from my surgeon to lift 100#. They don’t care about that, they don’t want me lifting anything at all and get kind of jumpy about it. All the employees have instructions to not let Ed lift anything. If I grab something, they all come running.

I get a kick out of it.

              Scoliosis/kyphosis

I have scoliosis & kyphosis...a curve of 91 degrees. I've seen the surgeon, and I also have a date for another MRI. The surgeon will be doing my surgery once. He feels that he can improve my curve, up to 45 degrees less. I'm hoping the surgery, will be coming up shortly after that!
