  • One year + 2 day anniversary!

I can't believe it but I have now joined the "One Year Anniversary Club" and it feels great! Actually my one year anniversary was 2 days ago but I didn't get a chance to post on that day.

I feel pretty darn good considering. My stamina is still not where it should be. I am still relatively stiff and I'm sure that will slowly improve. Parts of my back are still numb though that doesn't really bother me. I am still recovering from my frozen shoulder which will soon be a memory. (I will post my pre and postop photos as soon as I figure out how to do it!)

I was reflecting about my hospitalization this past weekend and although much of it I do not remember, there is a lot that I do remember. I went through heck (1 week hospitalization turned into 3 weeks due to postop complications...uggh). It was not an awful experience because the nurses and physicians at UC Davis were amazing, but it is not something that I care to repeat! But it's all over with...done. I don't dwell on it much. Like my doctor reminded me at one of my postop visits, I no longer have scoliosis!

My posture has improved, my presurgical thoracic pain is gone, my back is almost perfectly flat (like many of us, I had quite a disfiguring hump), and a nice perk is that I've managed to keep off 20 pounds postop. I no longer have to watch my thoracic curve continue on its curvy path. And discovered just prior to my surgery, worry how bad my lumbar curve was going to get. It's time now to focus more of my time on other things other than my back.

I am so glad that I had this surgery when I did. To those who are still contemplating it, you will know when the time is right. Make sure to have a specialist do this surgery, that you trust him/her, and ask him a ton of questions!

    Laurie,
It's good to hear you are doing so well at one year post-op. You will see a lot more improvement in your second year, but it's great to know you have your life back.

That's great that you are feeling so well give or take a few minor issues. I am getting to the point now where my son is coming up to the six month post-op time and lately I've been feeling that it's time to move on to other things as well. Not that there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about his scoliosis but I'm not sitting here waiting for something to be done about it like I was before his surgery, then the recovery and now he's back in school so I have more time for ME! ;-)

Congrats Ilray! Sounds like you are doing great. I am sure there will be further improvements over the next year but it's good to know you're happy with the surgery and can start focusing on something other than a curving back. All the best for the future.

          Laurie,
Congratulations on your one year anniversary! I think you gave good advice to those waiting for surgery.
I still have a lot of numbness, but it doesn't bother me either. I'm glad you're doing well. Way to go keeping 20 lbs. off. I'm working hard to keep 8 lbs. off & so far, so good.

Congratulations on 1 year post, you made it!

Did you ever find out if there was a Sac meeting? You ready for UCSF? Bring some foam, the seats are a killer. (smiley face)

Funny when someone here mentions numbness, I have to check every time....I have very little numbness.

              Laurie--
That is such wonderful news. And to keep off the 20 pounds you lost after surgery is super--which I could report the same! Congrats! Janet
